Mangroves are essential carbon sinks, capturing large amounts of carbon and protecting coastlines from severe weather conditions. We are expanding our efforts through mangrove restoration projects. Our goal is to restore, enhance and protect the ecosystems and biodiversity in the communities where we operate. As a Global Impact Partner to The Climate Tribe, we highlight our ongoing initiatives at the Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary. In celebration of the #InternationalDayForTheConservationOfTheMangroveEcosystem, our Group Chief Sustainability Officer, Maha AlQattan, shares more on our global efforts to protect and restore mangroves. Today, on the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, we celebrate mangroves as nature's guardians, nurturing marine biodiversity, protecting our shores from the forces of nature and increasing resilience against the adverse effects of climate change. The insightful documentary by The Climate Tribe, showcasing the remarkable efforts at the Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary, highlights the immense value mangroves provide for our well-being, food security and coastal protection. As a Global Impact Partner to The Climate Tribe, we emphasise the urgent need to protect these vital ecosystems. Speaking on the incredible transformation of the Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary, Major Ali Al Suweidi, President of the Emirates Marine Environmental Group and General Secretary for Emirates Nature-WWF, shares how the sanctuary is now home to over 2 million mangroves. Our very own Dr. Jimena Rodriguez, Oceans and Biodiversity Manager at DP World, also provides her valuable insights, emphasising the crucial role of the ocean for humanity and our commitment to safeguarding these vital ecosystems. Our Mangrove Forest Project, in collaboration with execution partner The Storey Group, aligns with the UAE's National Climate Change Plan and the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. We use EcoMatcher technology to track the growth and carbon sequestration of each tree, ensuring transparency of on-ground efforts. With approximately 100,000 seedlings planted, this project aims to sequester 26 tonnes of CO2 over the next 25 years, significantly contributing to SDG 14: Life Below Water. As UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay stated, "Mangroves are a link between land and sea...a haven of life that must be protected." By raising awareness and taking collective action, we can safeguard these vital ecosystems for future generations.
