AP monthly photo contest

Each month The Associated Press honors photographers for outstanding coverage while on assignment.

The winners for the April 2024 AP Photo Contest are Ariel Schalit for News Photography Single Image, for his photo of family and supporters of hostages held in the Gaza Strip screaming and holding up their hands, painted red to symbolize blood, calling for the captives' release and to mark six months since the Hamas-led Oct. 7 cross-border attack, in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Anupam Nath for News Photography Story, for his coverage of India's 6-week-long national election in seven phases which started on April 19 and results will be announced on June 4.

Aaron Favila for Feature Photography Single Image, for his photo of a meat vendor counting money at a public market in Marikina, Philippines.

Leo Correa for Feature Photography Story, for his coverage of the ancient Samaritan community praying during the Passover pilgrimage at the religion's holiest site on the top of Mt. Gerizim, near the West Bank town of Nablus.

Charlie Neibergall for Sports Photography Single Image, for his photo of runners leaping over the water pit during the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Drake Relays athletics meet in Des Moines, Iowa.

Petros Giannakouris for Sports Photography Story, for his series covering performers, who will take part in the flame lighting ceremony for the Paris Olympics, during rehearsals at the Ancient Olympia site in Greece.
