WPO World Packaging Organisation at the 1st European Packaging Symposium During the event, in Prague, WPO World Packaging Organisation was represented by its Global Ambassador and Executive Director of the Obalový institut SYBA, Iva Werbynska, and by the General Secretary, Johannes Bergmair. Nerida Kelton FAIP, WPO World Packaging Organisation Vice President Sustainability & Save Food, also participated virtually. The event discussed various topics like the German LUCID Packaging Register and the PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation), and gave a German and Austrian perspective on these subjects and other programs/legislations. The keynote address was given by Nerida Kelton FAIP who enphasized that the goal of the circular economy is a globally harmonised recycling system. She also addressed the topic of deposit, as an important element to incentive the consumers to return and to recycle packaging. Iva Werbynska spoke about food waste while Johannes Bergmair presented the Austrian perspective on PPWR and the obligations arising from the legislation on food contact packaging. Due to the importance of the content, the main local state television station, Czech Television, interviewed  WPO World Packaging Organisation representatives. WPO World Packaging Organisation at the #PackWeek 2024 in Ghana From July 15-20, WPO World Packaging Organisation Vice President Education, Kofi Essuman, will participate, as a Guest Speaker, in the #PackWeek 2024, organized by Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources Packaging Technology Students’ Association, which theme will be #SustainArtTech. The event focus on the need to build skills and knowledge in packaging in order to facilitate economic and industrial development in #Ghana. It also intends to inspire students and industry professionals to adopt eco-friendly technologies and artistic approaches in their packaging designs. Activities for the week, include a packaging design challenge, panel discussion, exhibition and awards for outstanding and innovative packaging designs. The four-year BSc Packaging Technology program was introduced in the 2020/2021 academic year. It currently has 530 students and the first 120 students will graduate in September 2024. The program run by the Department of Wood Science and Technology, focuses on the design, development, and manufacturing of packaging materials and systems and combines elements of engineering, design, and business to prepare students for careers in the packaging industry. Throughout the course, students learn about packaging materials, technologies, sustainability, quality control, and supply chain management. They gain practical skills in packaging design, testing, and production processes, as well as a deep understanding of industry regulations and standards. Students offering this program have taken part in the annual Packaging Research and Innovation Challenge organized by the Institute of Packaging Ghana (#IOPG ), a WPO World Packaging Organisation member, in partnership with Royal Crown Packaging Limited. The teams that won the 2023 WorldStar Student Gold Medal for Save Food Packaging, and the 2024 Overall Global Gold Award Winner, included students reading BSc Packaging Technology.
