Updates

  • Non-scheduled airlines and aircraft operators arriving in Australia must submit a Non-Scheduled Pre-Arrival Report (PAR) to let us know of impending arrival. The PAR must contain the following information: - aircraft identification - the intended first landing place in Australian territory - the estimated date and time of arrival - the name and contact details for the operator of the aircraft or aircraft owner - details about any animals or plants in the cabin. Types of non-scheduled flights include military, freighters, helicopters, independent aircraft operators and some private and business jets. The non-scheduled PAR must be submitted prior to the departure from the last international airport or anytime up to 30 minutes prior to arrival in Australian territory. The PAR must be submitted to a biosecurity officer at the first Australian airport of arrival, as listed in the Biosecurity Airport Contacts List here: https://brnw.ch/21wLsqX #flyingtoAustralia #Australianbiosecurity #aircraftbiosecurity #prearrivalreporting #airlines

  • Australian farmers have benefited from a period of sustained productivity growth over the last five decades. However, since 2000, this growth appears to be slowing compared to the productivity gains achieved during the 1980s and 1990s – when structural adjustment and the adoption of labour-saving mechanisation was in full force. A new Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) report released today looks at the state-of-play for long-term farm productivity in Australia, including recent drivers of growth, the challenges for farmers and the industry, and the opportunities for the future. When productivity stops growing, it is increasingly difficult for farmers to compete in international markets where prices are often low or volatile and competition is high. Opportunities to accelerate productivity growth will be important to ensure farmers stay competitive, while adapting to future challenges. Continued investment in research and development, and practices to help agriculture thrive in a changing climate, along with uptake of new technologies by farms will be key. Productivity also thrives in free and open markets, so government should ensure that farms are able to consolidate or change without unnecessary barriers. • NAIDOC Week celebrations were held across DAFF from 7 to 14 July with a focus on this year’s theme to ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’. Celebrations included participation in the Australian Public Service NAIDOC Week Touch Football Carnival, and in-house awards to recognise staff for the valuable contributions they made towards achieving First Nations related objectives and priorities in the department. At DAFF, we’re aiming to better engage with First Nations people, and include their voices and expertise in our decision-making. To ensure our #OneDAFF workforce reflects the communities we serve, we’re focusing on attracting and retaining First Nations employees. • That's a wrap on Farmsafe Australia’s National Farm Safety Week 2024. As part of this year’s ‘In Safe Hands’ campaign, six farming businesses from across Australia shared their stories around navigating farm safety issues, including livestock handling, child safety and farm machinery. While physical safety was a focus, the campaign also shed a light on how we can prioritise mental health and wellbeing within the agricultural sector, by: - encouraging open communication - providing access to mental health resources - promoting a healthy work-life balance - creating a supportive community - offering training and education. We proudly support Farmsafe Australia ’s National Farm Safety Week and their commitment toward long-term farm safety changes. • Australian agriculture has an internationally enviable emissions record, with some of the lowest emissions intensities in the world across cattle, grains and rice. An ‘emissions intensity’ measures the emissions produced per unit of activity. They are useful measures to compare the environmental impact of the same activities across different countries. The new Australian Bureau of Agricultural & Resource Economics & Sciences (ABARES) research, based on international data submissions to the United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change, and making use of the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emissions estimation methodology, presents farmgate emissions intensity estimates for different types of agricultural activities across countries. It introduces a representative basket of commodities for fair comparison across countries. This alleviates problems associated with the ‘emissions per dollar’ approach used by alternative emissions intensity statistics, which is biased by factors such as competitiveness, exchange rates, production mix and agricultural support - potentially inflating the value of production and falsely reducing the emissions intensity estimates.
