From his start with Bunzl in 1995 as the Sales & Marketing Director, Lance Ward (MD, Bunzl Australia & New Zealand) has made his mark. In this time the business has grown from less than $100m to more than $650m, and Lance has established himself as a strategic thinker who drives change. For Lance, leadership is about trust, and his open-door policy is well known in the business. "I try to lead with empathy, always seeking to understand by asking questioning and listening carefully. I put a lot of emphasis on building strong and trusting relationships, and being open and honest which helps us operate as empowered teams, which enables quick and effective decision making." Lance’s open-door policy extends to his home and friends, plus three grown children and their partners who are very much part of daily life. To relax he jumps onto his mountain bike or listens to (jazz) music - and is a recent convert to golf. Always one to give back, Lance is involved in community groups and sits on the board of the local Community Bank. As an enabler, helping others to achieve peak performance is important – demonstrated by his advancement of diversity and gender equality in leadership roles.

Securing global supply chains has had its challenges in a post-COVID world, making businesses adapt to the changes and come up with innovative ways to secure their supply chain. We spoke to Bunzl Australian & New Zealand’s Imports Inventory Manager, Louise Pooley to discuss how businesses can keep things flexible when adapting to an uncertain market. Pooley’s biggest piece of advice for businesses is to “be agile and try to anticipate impediments”, she continues “staying informed and constantly assessing and managing issues” is how businesses can have more immediate and effective responses. This past weekend, the 2024 WorldStar Award Ceremony was held at ProPak Asia in Bangkok, Thailand with over 300 people from 41 different countries in attendance. Hosted by the WPO World Packaging Organisation, the WorldStar Global Packaging Awards are the pre-eminent global award in packaging – illustrating the continual advancement of sustainable packaging design and technology around the world. In attendance were Bunzl's Kim Hetherington, Director Regional Development, and Ching Chong Goh, Director Regional Sourcing, who accepted the award in recognition of our win in the Labeling and Decoration Category for Sustain's #OzHarvestCollection. During the event, Kim also participated in the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP)'s workshop panel on ‘Sustainable Packaging Design: The Future of Paper, Renewables & Compostable Packaging’, discussing the importance of innovation and development in different markets.
