Konekt Regional Manager for WA and NT, Kaila Hamilton, shares her thoughts on a recent study released by the Medical Journal of Australia. The study titled “The burden of working time lost to compensable occupational injury and disease in Australia, 2012–17: a retrospective population‐based study” provides some fascinating insights into the impact of work-related injuries.  🌟 40,000 full-time jobs lost annually: Each year, the equivalent of 40,000 full-time jobs are lost due to work-related injury and disease, affecting 150,000 workers' compensation claims. This underscores the importance of occupational rehabilitation and return to work programs. 🌟  Mental health claims: Mental health accounts for 13% of lost working years, with female workers disproportionately affected. This highlights the critical need for psychological services and interventions in both prevention and return to work processes. 🌟 Leading injury types: Traumatic joint and muscle injuries, along with musculoskeletal disorders, account for the most significant loss of working years. This stresses the need for robust safety measures and early return to work programs. While ongoing efforts in early intervention and support remain a major focus, there's more to be done to prevent workplace injuries and support injured workers. As we gain more insights from population-level studies, we can better tailor our services to improve health outcomes for all Australian workers. 🌟 New Western Australian audiometry legislation with mandatory testing 🌟 Are you prepared? Work Health and Safety (General) Regulations 2022 came into effect on 31st March 2024 mandating that all employers must provide occupational noise audiometry for Western Australian employees who require hearing protection against noise that exceeds certain exposure standards. As a Person Conducting a Business (PCBU), you have the responsibility to arrange baseline audiometry testing for your employees.
