How do 1D and 2D #barcodes compare? Here’s a quick summary from a fact sheet in our 2D #Barcode Learning Centre: 1️⃣ 1D Barcodes (EAN-13): These are the traditional linear barcodes you see on most products. They consist of vertical lines and need a quiet zone for scanning. They encode a GTIN-13 but don't support attributes such as use-by dates. 2️⃣ 2D Barcodes (GS1 DataMatrix): Smaller and more powerful, these barcodes can store up to 2,335 alphanumeric characters. They support detailed data such as batch numbers and expiry dates. These barcodes are scanned by optical (camera-based) scanners. 💡 Key takeaway: While #2DB are becoming more popular – especially with optical scanners – 1D barcodes are still widely used.
