Today, we came together to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day to recognise our women engineers. Women have long been the pioneers in the computing industry and have across the times been pivotal to the growth of the discipline. This includes acting like “human computers” during the world wars when in 1942 Hedy Lamarr invented frequency hopping technology that has evolved to what we know today as wi-fi and bluetooth. In the 1950s Katherine Johnson, whose critical calculations ensured safe space travel for astronauts. In modern times, many other women play leading parts in the engineering space and continue to do important and influential work.
