About us
Surfers for Climate is an Australian-based registered charity dedicated to turning the tide on climate change. We recognise the ‘True Locals’ of this continent, honouring and learning from First Nations connection to country and culture. As ocean lovers, we have an intrinsic connection to nature and are reliant on a healthy ecosystem for our survival and enjoyment. We are all custodians of the ocean. We have a chance to prevent our favourite surf spots from becoming faded stories of waves we used to surf, and instead see them remain thriving places where future generations can create stoked out memories of their own. Climate change needs a status update; from a crisis that is happening to us, to a challenge that can be solved by us, as surfers and ocean lovers, taking leadership in the line-up.

Jacinda Ardern served as the 40th Prime Minister of New Zealand from 2017 to 2023. Born in 1980, she became the world's youngest female head of government when she took office at age 37. Ardern led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in 2020 but stepped down in 2023, citing burnout. Her tenure was marked by her handling of major crises, including the Christchurch mosque shootings and the COVID-19 pandemic. Ardern gained international recognition for her compassionate leadership style, progressive policies on climate change and social issues, and her emphasis on kindness in politics. After leaving office, she continued to advocate for global issues like climate change and online extremism. #jacindaardern #newzealand #quotes #famousquotes #inspiration #inspirationalquotes #motivation #environmentalquotes #sustainabilityquotes #wordsofwisdom #ecofriendly #conservation #climateeducation #surfersforclimate

This week, Resources Minister, Madeleine King, approved new gas exploration permits in waters near Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia. The Australian Government claims that this is aiming to boost national gas reserves, despite Australia being one of the biggest gas producers and exporters in the world. This decision massively conflicts with Australia's climate goals and will extend fossil fuel extraction and use beyond 2050. The approval of these exploration permits, which include waters off the Otway Basin, South Australia, northwestern Tasmania, and the Sorrell Basin, almost ensure that these delicate ecosystems will be impacted by damaging seismic blasting. The Australian government has also approved new exploration permits off Western Australia’s coast. The Australian Government should be putting an end to new offshore oil and gas - not ramping it up! #oilandgas #lineinthesand #pep11 #stoppep11 #offshoreoilandgas #nomoreoilandgas #australia #climatenews #environmentalnews #sustainabilitynews #planetearth #oceans #renewableenergy #ecofriendly #conservation #climateaction #climateeducation #surfersforclimate

Last year he was on our podcast, but this week we’re hearing sad news that Captain Paul Watson has been arrested in Greenland. Police report that the Greenpeace co-founder, Sea Shepherd founder and fearless anti-whaling activist faces a court hearing to determine his potential extradition to Japan. According to his organisation, the Captain Paul Watson Foundation (CPWF), he was apprehended during a layover while en route to confront Japan’s new factory whaling vessel, Kangei Maru, in the North Pacific. CPWF suspects the arrest stems from a red notice related to Watson’s past anti-whaling activities in Antarctic waters. The recently launched 9,300-tonne Kangei Maru, Japan’s first such vessel in over seven decades, is designed to process whales caught by smaller ships. It features a slipway capable of handling 70-ton fin whales and can store up to 600 tons of meat, allowing for extended sea voyages. The ship embarked from Japan in May. Listen to Captain Paul Watson being interviewed by our CEO Josh Kirkman last year, in a fascinating chat that you don’t want to miss: https://lnkd.in/gPH2GtMN #paulwatson #captainpaulwatson #captainpaulwatsonfoundation #seashepherd #greenpeace #podcast #surfpodcast #environmentalpodcast #surfingpodcast #surfing #surfers #environmentalscience #environmentaleducation #socialimpact #ecofriendly #climatechange #climateeducation #surfersforclimate

Check out our podcast chat with Jason Burns, Managing Director of ECOlectrical, interviewed by Josh Kirkman, discussing all things solar, renewables, and doing what’s right for the planet.
I recently sat down with Surfers For Climate as part of their Podcast Series Carpark Convos, where we talked all things solar & surfing. Solar energy and sustainability has always been something I'm passionate about, particularly after my Masters in Environmental and Business Management. We're lucky enough to live in a sunburnt country, spoiled with sunshine that not only helps you save money but also reduce your carbon emissions. As the most reliable source of renewable energy, not only does solar power have a very solid future in Australia, but I think it has the ability to supply the whole world. SunCable has received initial environmental approval in the Northern Territory for a MASSIVE 10 gigawatt solar project near Elliott. The plan includes an 800-kilometre transmission line to Darwin and a subsea cable to Singapore. The project, now led by billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes, awaits financing and Indigenous Land Use Agreements. While the NT Environment Protection Authority has noted environmental risks, including 4.4 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions from land clearing, the project is expected to become carbon neutral after four years and remain carbon negative for its 70-year lifespan.
