A tech fanfare There are plenty of examples of underground mine operators leveraging the new smarts and hardware on offer from OEM and solution providers. In IM's July 2024 issue, Daniel Gleeson details some of these, focused specifically on the underground drilling space. Included in this in-depth article is a case study from The Electric Mine 2024 on the deployment of a Sandvik DL422iE fully-automated, battery-powered top hammer longhole drill at IGO Ltd's Nova mine in Western Australia - an operation where Barminco is the operator; a collaboration between Epiroc, Boliden, Algoryx Simulation and Örebro University on autonomous face drilling; a deep dive into Mine Master Ltd.'s FLP1410 single boom drill rig; the highlights of Swick Mining Services ' latest DeepEX drilling milestone; and the latest overbreak/underbreak stats from Hexagon Mining's Development Optimiser platform. We also feature a groundbreaking solution aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency, UFR AutoPrep, from Universal Field Robots. Congratulations to Thiess, Caterpillar Inc. (Cat), and WesTrac Cat on recently hitting one million autonomous miles drilled at a BHP mine. The journey toward autonomous drilling at the mine didn’t happen overnight. A multistep evolution toward automation saw the three companies implementing a building block approach beginning with the Cat MD6250 drill. “The phased approach progressed through three stages of drill automation,” WesTrac technology and solutions manager Nakia Brewer said. 📣💡🦾 Universal Field Robots Founder and MD Jeff Sterling is speaking at Queensland Mining & Engineering Exhibition (QME) 2024 about advances in smart mining: exploring the promise of zero entry mining and automation. Despite advancements in mining safety, Queensland unfortunately still averages about 2.4 fatalities and 80 to 100 serious accidents each year. Zero entry mining, alongside automation in haulage, enhances safety by minimising human exposure to hazards. The shift towards zero entry in haulage demonstrates its potential to safeguard workers. Key takeaways: 💡 Assessing the potential of autonomous driving technology 💡 Tracking developments in WiFi and connectivity to support mining operations 💡 Enabling remote monitoring and control from centralised or urban locations 💡 Innovating blasting technology, including wireless detonators 💡 Mapping advances in automated loading and variable density explosives Are you heading to QME 2024?
