Curiosity. This was the trait that a top Australian Sailing Coach said that they looked for in their athletes. And it turns out to be exactly what is needed to become a leader. If you are curious, you are open to learning. If you are open to learning, you can improve. If you improve, and remain curious you can achieve anything. Leadership is less a destination, and more a lifestyle. A way of thinking. A way of acting in the world. Once you embody the thoughts, and beliefs of a leader its very hard for you to stop. That said, leadership continues to evolve and new challenges require leaders to remain as learns. Stay curious. Its the defining trait of any great leader.

Critical conversations around your career, often happen when you're not even in the room. So how can you control what's said? Essentially it comes down to authentic relationships, and understanding we can only influence, not actually control. Being proactive around developing relationships, positions you powerfully to be able to understand what's REALLY going on behind closed doors. But how? By providing access to identify what's really going on when you're in the room. The mark of an authentic relationship is one where communication flows openly. Whether the topic be positive or indeed negative. At top tier consulting firm McKinsey & Company, employees are trained to continually ask for feedback from their manager. Managers are trained to deliver both positive and constructive negative feedback as required. In this high-performance environment, it is widely acknowledged that a person can only progress when they know exactly where they stand. Not in a state of delusion or hope. When you know where you actually stand, it gives you can decide the correct course of action. Authentic relationships then provide you with the best ability to design an action plan which is actually suitable to the perception your team have of you. This means that whether you are in the room or not - you can be sure that you have the full picture about what people are saying. Good, bad, or indifferent.
