About us
Bioenergy Europe (formerly AEBIOM) is the common voice of the bioenergy sector, with the aim of developing a sustainable bioenergy market based on fair business conditions. Founded in 1990, it brings together 40 national associations and approximately 90 companies from all over Europe. Bioenergy Europe hosts the European Pellet Council (EPC) and the International Biomass Torrefaction Council (IBTC), which are umbrella organisations representing the interests of the European wood pellet sector and wood torrefaction industries respectively.

Climate change is increasing the susceptibility of the world's forests to stressors such as wildfires and pests, according to a new FAO flagship publication that emphasizes the role of innovation in achieving a sustainable future for the forestry sector. The report, titled “The State of the World’s Forests 2024: Forest-sector innovations towards a more sustainable future,” says there’s evidence to suggest that #ClimateChange is making forests more vulnerable to stressors such as wildfires and pests. Wildfire intensity and frequency are increasing, including in areas not previously affected, with fires in 2023 releasing an estimated 6,687 megatonnes of carbon dioxide globally. Boreal fire was previously responsible for about 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In 2021, such fires reached a new high, mainly driven by extended drought causing an increase in fire severity and fuel consumption, and accounted for nearly one-quarter of total wildfire emissions. Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is a carbon negative energy solution, capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while producing renewable energy. This makes it the only carbon removal technology that produces carbon negative energy. #carboncapture #carbonstorage #bioenergy To fight #climatechange the world needs to reduce its GreenHouse Gas emissions. There are sectors where this is much harder to achieve, such as aviation or heavy industry. To compensate for those sectors, a report from the UN’s IPCC stated that the deployment of carbon dioxide removals is unavoidable. #BECCS delivers high-quality #carbonremovals at a reasonable price while also supporting energy security, but the current market needs to be reformed for its carbon removals to be appropriately valued. For this, the EU should set up a proper framework for BECCS that is reflected in the Carbon Removals Certification Framework #CRCF and in the Net-Zero Industry Act #NZIA.
