Conor McGregor reveals he suffered a broken toe, which led to him having to withdraw from 303. Same leg that he broke versus Poirier in 2021. "It needs a few weeks that's it," he wrote. https://t.co/RltaqoZHn9 pic.twitter.com/WqU0zl0nze

McGregor has not fought since suffering a broken leg in the first round of his July 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier.

One of the greatest fighters in UFC history, McGregor's fame far outweighs his performance in the octagon in recent years. The 35-year-old has lost three of his last four fights and has only competed in the UFC four times since November 2016. His 2018 loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov and was something of a demarcation of the turning point in his career.

McGregor has been teasing a return from his leg injury for more than a year, with Chandler long pegged as his opponent after they competed as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter. The injury sent UFC president Dana White into scramble mode, eventually landing Alex Pereira vs. Jiří Procházka as the new main event for UFC 303.

"Conor's going to be 36 in July. He's got plenty of money. I don't ever think that guys like that, Jon Jones, who knows, maybe he'll fight again, maybe he won't," White recently told Jim Rome of McGregor. "Conor McGregor, maybe he'll fight again, maybe he won't. You never know with some of the guys that get to that level. You never know if you're ever going to see them again.

"The other thing with getting older … you get injured a lot easier, you get hurt a lot easier. More injuries happen than did when you were younger, and you're less willing to step in there with an injury than when you were young and hungry and broke."

Based on his own comments, McGregor seems to be determined to fight again. McGregor said he has two fights remaining on his current UFC contract, and it seems likely White would be able to get McGregor vs. Chandler on a card by the fall.

UFC 306 at the Sphere on Sept. 14 seems like an obvious choice at this point.
