To gain a deeper understanding of the Artificial Intelligence Readiness Assessment (AIRA) and the current state of AI readiness in Bhutan, a validation workshop was held, gathering relevant stakeholders from various agencies. During the workshop, over 30 participants were presented with the findings from the Survey and Key Informant Interviews regarding Bhutan’s AI Readiness. The results were organized into three key pillars: Government as an Enabler of AI, Government as a User of AI, and Ethical AI. Participants also engaged in interactive sessions centered on the Key Informant Interviews. AIRA, a comprehensive tool developed by the UNDP, evaluates Bhutan’s preparedness for integrating ethical AI. In partnership with the GovTech Bhutan, the first-ever AIRA workshop took place on April 17th of this year. This workshop provided valuable insights into the AIRA Framework, emphasizing the use of AI for decision-making tailored specifically to the needs of the government and various sectors.

Our pristine glaciers, the lifeblood of our rivers, are melting at an alarming rate. By 2050, a third of these glaciers could disappear, leading to longer droughts and nearly 1856 water sources drying up in Bhutan. But there is hope! The National Adaptation Plan focuses on strengthening our ecosystems, protecting watersheds, restoring wetlands, and planting more trees. Together, we can improve flood risk management, create robust river systems, and build climate-resilient hydropower facilities. The NAP launched in September 2023 is a roadmap for climate action. Its formulation was led by the Royal Government of Bhutan in partnership with UNDP and the Green Climate Fund.

“I am hesitant to eat during air travels because airline toilets are not accessible for persons with disabilities,” said Phurpa Wangchuk, a wheelchair user. In addition to accessibility, the persons with disabilities also face discrimination and a host of other challenges in their daily lives. Recognizing this, UNDP in collaboration with the Disabled People’s Organization of Bhutan conducted a Disability Equality Training (DET) for Bhutan Airlines and DrukAir. Over 40 airline staff and cabin crew members were introduced to various disabilities, issues and discrimination faced by persons with disabilities and the support they require during air travels. The DET is a part of UNDP’s effort to advance the rights of persons with disabilities and foster a fair and equitable society.

"The beauty of the accelerator lab network is that you not only innovate, but you foster innovation, you nurture innovation" - Honourable Prime Minister, Dasho Tshering Tobgay As the four-day event concluded, ideas were exchanged, solutions explored, reflections made, friendships strengthened, and stories from various countries united to find solutions for sustainable development challenges. With research and development at the core, the energy of the 57 innovators from the UNDP Accelerator Labs Network filled the room as they documented their experimentations. With renewed motivation from the UNDP Global Research & Development Experimentation Codification Fest, we are confident that the Heads of Experimentation will return to their countries with new ideas and stories from Bhutan. It has been an honour for UNDP Bhutan to host this global event. More updates on the event will be shared soon.
