After closely monitoring the ice conditions for the last number of days, Baffinland confirms that the ice conditions have reached a continuous path of 3/10th concentrations, which means that we will begin the 2024 shipping season. The first convoy of vessels entered the Regional Study Area around noon today and consisted of two tugs. The tugs will proceed in advance of the ore carriers so they can arrive at Milne Port and get prepared to assist the ore carriers once they arrive. The tugs will pass by Pond Inlet around 2:45pm. Four ore carriers will enter the Regional Study Area and will transit by Pond Inlet tomorrow at approximately 4am/5am. If you have questions please email shipping@baffinland.com or call 899-1807. As part of our preparations for the 2024 Shipping Season, Baffinland has hired a team of Inuit Shipping Monitors to track all vessel activity along the Northern Shipping Route. Please join us in welcoming this year’s Shipping Monitors: Cassidy Pitseolak, Evan Kyak, Geela Simonee, Maxine Katsak, Nina Kautuq, Rhoda Quaraq, Susie Simonee, Kyla Killiktee, Amanda Koonoo, JJ Simonee and Sarah Enooagak. Baffinland Shipping Monitors, based in Pond Inlet, actively observe and monitor all vessels travelling to and from Milne Inlet, providing daily updates. They also report any deviations from our mitigation measures, such as ships going above our industry-leading 9 knot speed limit. The Shipping Monitors serve as a direct link between the community and Baffinland, providing information about our mitigation and management measures, and addressing questions about the Project. We are excited to have some returning Shipping Monitors from last season, and are delighted to welcome the new crew members. Some of our former Shipping Monitors have moved on to other roles within the Company, and have developed long-lasting careers at Baffinland. We are committed to providing training and employment opportunities to all Nunavummiut. Stop by and say hello to our team on the second floor of the MHTO building in Pond Inlet. Based on the latest ice and weather forecasts, Baffinland has given 72 hour notice to the Mayor & Council of Pond Inlet, and the MHTO Board, that our 2024 Shipping Season could potentially begin as early as Thursday, July 25th. We typically start shipping once certain minimum requirements are met, including confirmation that the floe edge is closed and the presence of 3/10th or less ice concentrations in a continuous path from the entrance of Eclipse Sound to Milne Port. Our latest analysis of ice charts, weather data and satellite imagery suggests that the conditions for shipping will soon be met. The actual start of the season will depend on prevailing ice conditions. As new data becomes available, an additional notification will be sent to Pond Inlet, at least 24 hours prior to the anticipated start of shipping. Please join Baffinland in wishing all Nunavummiut a Happy #NunavutDay. Today, July 9th, we celebrate unique Inuit culture, and revisit great moments in the territory’s history. We commemorate the creation of the territory, as well as the signing of the Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. Festive events will be held across the territory, including at Mary River and Milne Inlet, to showcase traditional Inuit knowledge, art and customs, and to foster pride in Nunavut’s achievements, while promoting Indigenous rights and reconciliation. Nunavut Day is also an opportunity to educate other Canadians about the vital contributions of the Inuit people to Canada, and to embrace the territory’s official motto, ‘Nunavut, Our Strength.’ Baffinland joins all Nunavummiut in celebrating their rich culture, history, and deep love of the land. ᐃᓚᓕᐅᑎᒋᑦ ᐹᕙᓐᓛᓐᑯᑦ ᖁᕕᐊᓱᖁᔨᑎᓪᓗᒋᑦ ᓄᓇᕗᒻᒥᐅᓕᒫᓂᒃ ᓄᓇᕘᑉ ᐅᓪᓗᖓᓂ. ᐅᓪᓗᒥ, ᔪᓚᐃ 9, ᖁᕕᐊᓲᑎᖃᕐᓂᐊᖅᑐᒍᑦ ᐊᔾᔨᐅᖏᑦᑐᓂᒃ ᐃᓄᐃᑦ ᐱᖅᑯᓯᖏᓐᓂᒃ, ᐃᖅᑲᐅᒪᑎᓪᓗᑕ ᐊᓕᐊᓇᐃᑦᑐᓂᒃ ᖁᕕᐊᓇᑦᑎᐊᖅᑐᓂᒃ ᓄᓇᕘᑉ ᐊᑐᖅᓯᒪᔭᕕᓂᖏᓐᓂᒃ. ᐃᖅᑲᐅᒪᑦᑎᐊᖅᑕᕗᑦ ᓴᖅᑭᑕᐅᓚᐅᖅᑎᓪᓗᒍ ᓄᓇᕗᑦ, ᐊᒻᒪᓗᑦᑕᐅᖅ ᐊᑎᓕᐅᖅᑕᐅᓂᖓ ᓄᓇᕗᒻᒥ ᐱᖁᔭᑦ ᓄᓇᕗᒻᒥ ᓄᓇᑖᕈᑏᓪᓗ ᐊᖏᕈᑎᑦ. ᖃᓄᐃᓕᐅᕈᑏᑦ ᖁᕕᐊᓲᑎᖃᕐᓂᕐᒧᑦ ᓄᓇᕗᓗᒃᑖᒥ ᐊᑐᖅᑕᐅᓂᐊᖅᑐᑦ, ᐱᖃᓯᐅᑎᓪᓗᒋᑦ ᓄᓘᔮᖕᓂ ᕿᙳᐊᓂᓗ, ᓴᖅᑭᔮᖅᑎᑦᑎᓗᑎᒃ ᐱᖅᑯᓯᕐᓂᒃ ᐃᓄᐃᑦ ᖃᐅᔨᒪᔭᖏᓐᓂᒃ, ᓴᓇᙳᐊᒐᕐᓂᒃ ᐊᒻᒪ ᐃᓕᖅᑯᓯᕐᓂᒃ, ᖁᕕᐊᓲᑎᖃᕐᓗᑎᒡᓗ ᓄᓇᕘᑉ ᐊᓂᒍᖅᓯᒪᔭᖏᓐᓂᒃ, ᐱᔪᒥᓴᐃᓯᓐᓈᕐᓗᑎᒃ ᓄᓇᖃᖅᑳᖅᓯᒪᔪᑦ ᐱᔪᓐᓇᐅᑎᖏᓐᓂᒃ ᐋᕿᒋᐊᕈᑎᖃᕐᓂᖏᓐᓂᓪᓗ. ᓄᓇᕘᑉ ᐅᓪᓗᖓ ᐱᕕᒃᓴᐅᕆᔭᐅᖕᒥᔪᖅ ᐃᓕᓐᓂᐊᖅᑎᑦᑎᓂᕐᒧᑦ ᑲᓇᑕᒥᐅᓂᒃ ᐃᑲᔫᑎᖃᖅᓯᒪᓪᓚᕆᖕᓂᖏᓐᓂᒃ ᐃᓄᐃᑦ ᑲᓇᑕᒥ, ᖁᕕᐊᒋᓗᒍᓗ ᓄᓇᕘᑉ ᐅᖃᐅᓯᖅᑕᖓ, “ᓄᓇᕗᑦ, ᓴᙱᓂᕗᑦ.” ᐹᕙᓐᓛᓐᑯᑦ ᐃᓚᐅᓂᐊᖅᑐᑦ ᓄᓇᕗᒻᒥᐅᓕᒫᑦ ᖁᕕᐊᓲᑎᖃᖅᑎᓪᓗᒋᑦ ᐱᖅᑯᓯᑦᑎᐊᕙᖕᒥᒃ, ᐊᑐᖅᓯᒪᓂᑯᓂᒃ, ᐊᒻᒪ ᐱᐅᒃᓴᓪᓚᕆᖕᓂᒃᒧᑦ ᓄᓇᒥᒃ.
