About us

A charitable organization that advances food security in the Fredericton Area through inclusive programs and services. Greener Village Pillars: - Food Bank and Clothing Boutique - Learning Kitchen - Community Gardens - Life Skills Development Over 30 years, Greener Village has become a gathering place for those who share the idea that food can bridge whatever might divide us. Just as food brings us around a table, so too can it bring our community together behind our belief that the challenges of life will not ever exceed our capacity to care for one another. The problem is real and growing. In 2012, the Canadian Community Health Survey indicated that 15.6% of households in New Brunswick were food insecure, 2.6% higher than the national average. These figures reveal that there are 47,000 food insecure households in New Brunswick. Within severely insecure households: - a majority reported feeling hungry, losing weight, and cutting or skipping meals; - more than 1/3 reported adults in the household who hadn’t eaten for an entire day; - over 2/3 could not afford to provide balanced meals to the children in their household; - 1 in 6 children in these households were hungry. Founded in 1984 as a conventional not-for-profit food bank, Greener Village has since shed its original model and developed programming that addresses hunger and food security through capacity building and fellowship. We serve over 1000 families a month, or approximately 3000 people, 37% of which are children. Consistent access to safe and nutritious food is fundamental; help us make sure that no one in our community goes hungry: www.greenervillage.org

A recent report titled “Measuring Poverty In Canada Through a Deprivation Lens,” co-authored by Food Banks Canada | Banques alimentaires Canada, Maple Leaf Centre for Food Security, and the Maytree foundation, reveals that nearly one-quarter of Canadians live in poverty. This stark reality is set against a backdrop of rising corporate profits and significant economic challenges for the working class. Key Highlights: · 23% of Canadians experienced food insecurity in 2022. · Over half of renters spend more than 30% of their income on rent. · The report uses the Material Deprivation Index (MDI) instead of the traditional Market Basket Measure (MBM), focusing on deprivation of goods and services. · 25% of surveyed Canadians experienced at least two deprivation items, and 17% experienced three or more. · Employment does not shield individuals from poverty; 55-60% of those in poverty have jobs. · Black and Indigenous Canadians face higher rates of poverty (34.4% and 37.4%, respectively). The findings underscore the urgent need for comprehensive approaches to tackle food insecurity and poverty. Greener Village’s THRIVE Campaign aims to address these issues by enhancing food rescue efforts, ensuring surplus food is redirected to those in need, and providing holistic support to uplift vulnerable communities. By leveraging our existing distribution systems and collaborations with local businesses and farmers, the THRIVE Campaign strives to create sustainable solutions that mitigate the impact of economic inequalities and promote food security for all. Tackling Food Waste: A Community Effort for a Sustainable Future Food waste is a significant issue in Canada, with 58% of all food produced annually being lost or wasted. That’s nearly 35.5 million tonnes of food! Not only does this food waste contribute to 56.5 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually, but it also squanders the precious resources used to produce, process, and transport our food. Shockingly, 32% of this wasted food is still perfectly edible and could be redirected to support Canadians in need, according to Second Harvest. By redirecting this food, we can provide essential nutrition to those who need it most, reduce our environmental footprint, and promote a more sustainable food system. Read our story about food waste and what we plan to do about it: https://lnkd.in/gFQxKJJB At Greener Village, we are committed to making a difference. We’re building Atlantic Canada's first Perishable Food Rescue Centre, aiming to rescue and distribute over $4 million worth of food annually that would otherwise end up in landfills. Our approach involves: 1. Helping Farmers: Partnering with farmers to redirect imperfect and excess produce to our centre, where it’s processed into shelf-stable items. 2. Partnering with Grocers: Creating channels for products near spoilage or not meeting aesthetic standards to be rescued and repurposed. 3. Supporting Restaurants: Providing storage solutions for unused or unsold prepared food until it’s distributed to those in need. ✨ Join the THRIVE Campaign ✨ Food waste is not just an environmental issue; it’s a call to action. By supporting the THRIVE Campaign, you’re helping us build the Perishable Food Rescue Centre and ensure nutritious food reaches those in need. Your involvement can make a significant impact on the lives of many and promote a healthier, more sustainable future for all. Let’s work together to reduce waste, protect our environment, and ensure everyone has access to the nutrition they need. 🌎💚 #FoodWaste #Sustainability #FoodSecurity #THRIVECampaign #CommunityImpact

The Petitcodiac Community Garden in New Brunswick is making a significant impact amidst rising grocery costs by growing and donating staple foods to local food banks and senior complexes. This initiative has provided over 500 pounds of fresh produce annually, offering a much-needed boost to clients accustomed to canned and frozen foods. At Greener Village, we share this commitment to community support through our own community garden beds and greenhouses, supplying fresh produce for our clients' grocery boxes and teaching clients and community members how to grow their own food. Just as Petitcodiac Garden aims to alleviate food insecurity, we strive to ensure our community has access to nutritious, fresh food. Our ambitious THRIVE Campaign aims to increase the availability of fresh foods by building Atlantic Canada's first dedicated perishable food rescue centre.
