In recent years, the GenAI space has seen explosive growth, bringing widely adopted technologies that enhance creativity and productivity. However, this progress comes with a notable downside: the exponential increase in model architecture sizes. Consider these examples: Grock-1: 314B parameters META Llama-2: 70B parameters OpenAI GPT-3: 175B parameters OpenAI GPT-4: 1.76T parameters Anthropic Clause-3 Opus: 2T parameters Mistral 8x7B: 47B parameters The terms "large language model" highlights both the size and the capabilities of these models. While larger models can express more information from training sets, bigger isn’t always better due to several issues: - Energy inefficiency: Large models require significant time and energy to train. - Accessibility: Running or training 100B+ parameter models is impractical without specialized hardware. - Interpretability and controllability: Larger models are more complex and harder to manage. To mitigate these challenges, techniques like pruning, knowledge distillation, MoE and feature relevance analysis have been proposed, but they remain labor-intensive. So I believe that we need a robust theoretical framework, akin to thermodynamic phase diagrams, to guide us in selecting optimal architectures (MLP, CNN, Transformers, SSM, neural ODE, etc...) and sizes for various datasets. This approach would help us address the issues of efficiency, accessibility, and control more effectively. Tonight, I had a memorable moment from an exclusive gathering after the International Economic Forum of the Americas, hosted at the residence of Robert P. Sanders, the US Consul General in Montreal. It was an honor to stand alongside Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois, who highlighted Hippoc in his speech. We were also privileged to have Ambassador Bruce Heyman in attendance, adding depth to our conversation about how Hippoc's generative, predictive, and explicative AI models can lead the charge in creating more responsible technology while delivering better business outcomes.
