As Darby , one of our Athlete Ambassadors, often says, "Just give me a chance, let me show you what I am capable of." The employment rate for individuals with intellectual disabilities is 25%, the employment rate for Special Olympic Athletes is 45%. One of the key legacies that Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Calgary 2024 aims to leave behind is a shift in organizational attitudes towards inclusion. For too long, unfounded biases and misconceptions have plagued the recruitment process, preventing many talented individuals with disabilities from realizing their full potential. Already, visionary organizations like Tourism Calgary and TC Energy & François Poirier have begun their journey towards disability-inclusive employment by connecting with Goodwill Industries of Alberta who will support organizations on their inclusive hiring journey. Many others, including Pembina Pipeline Corporation , Safeway, Tim Hortons, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, RBC, Hyatt Hotels Corporation, EY and Wood Automotive Group, have embraced this vision and are leading by example. You've given every athlete that chance, you have showcased their abilities and the legacy will be that together, we're shaping a future where everyone is welcomed, valued, and empowered to shine.
