We make great footwear, not just great sketches. Successfully bringing footwear to market requires more than good design. From costing to commercialization, The Directive Collective knows how to make shoes. We offer a product-led design approach that ensures design intent is preserved from sketch to sample to production. Product development and engineering are considered in every design project so that footwear concept fit, functions and perform. Because nobody knows running like a runner. Running is not only what we know, it’s what we live. With over 28,000Km personally logged by Founder and Principal Richard Kuchinsky we proudly specialize in performance running. We believe Runners make better running shoe designers. Start-ups welcome. A footwear start-up needs everything. The Directive Collective specializes in an integrated, strategic process from brand to design brief to development to production. We help bring your vision to market as efficiently and effectively as possible leveraging over 20+ years of footwear industry experience and know-how.

17 Years of The Directive Collective is a lot of mistakes. While there's many things I am proud of in 17 years of running my own footwear design consultancy (projects, products, clients and awards), my greatest sense of accomplishment is the accumulation of failures. To me, every failure is an opportunity to learn. My name is Richard Kuchinsky and I am The Directive Collective. Here’s what I’ve learnt. https://lnkd.in/grmmiuqp #design #footwear #footweardesign #footweardesigner

Design is a Compromise. Good design is knowing what to sacrifice. Thinking you can magically make everything awesome is for inexperienced young designers and children. It’s fantasy. It’s just not how things work. Recipe for disaster? A client unwilling to compromise and *everything* is top priority. Stay as far away as possible... Recipe for success? Look at strategy goals as a spectrum. For every positive gain there is an inversely proportional negative loss. Pair up and understand how one factor affects another. Increased durability may add weight. A more natural fit may be less efficient at fast speeds. Decide not only which wins you want, but which losses you are willing to accept. What do you think is worth compromising on? Is a faster shoe worth it if it's not sustainable? Is a higher quality product worth a higher price if it's unattainable for the mass market? Is "good enough" OK if it's quick to market? 📄 Article from the latest The Directive Collective newsletter.
