    Helping travel agency owners succeed

AA will continue awarding miles regardless purchase path, will not publish a preferred agency list, is offering increased (temporary) incentives to book #NDC and is putting most content back into #EDIFACT. All good steps… but why isn't any of the travel trade media asking AA about the future of #AAdvantageBusiness? It hasn’t been covered in any article or LinkedIn post (save one reference from Jeff Klee). Most coverage of Raja’s departure, Isom’s contrition and the policy changes by AA discuss what this means for NDC. In doing so, they miss the point that the AA strategy over the past 18 months wasn't about NDC. It was about #direct distribution and ownership of the customer, based largely on a flawed understanding of the role and influence of #managedtravel. NDC was simply one of the tools used to achieve that direct strategy. The industry has been so focused on NDC specifically that this episode played easily into the “NDC is flawed” narrative – which is simplistic at best and probably just wrong. This brings us back to AAdvantage Business - the clearest evidence that NDC was a tool and not the endgame for AA. It would have been quite easy (even expected) that this program would apply in NDC channels when it was announced last fall, but it does not. Looking forward, will the AA reconciliation project include changes to AAdvantage Business? If not, is it reasonable (or cynical) to view their recent actions as only a calculated, temporary tactic shift while still advancing toward a pre-existing strategy of direct distribution? Interested to hear your thoughts on this in the comments! #Airlines #Distribution #BusinessTravel

    Helping travel agency owners succeed

~ A thank you to our industry ~ In the week since Robert Isom’s statements that AA had erred in its distribution strategy, much has been written about the origins of the strategy, why it failed, why AA changed course and how AA will move forward. I’ve even seen many people *thanking AA* for their policy change. But thanks are NOT owed to AA. Thanks are owed to travel managers at corporate accounts, who directed travelers away from AA, despite the higher fares or a required connection, in pursuit of a greater goal (often facing pressure from travelers or C-suite about choice/cost). Thanks are owed to the TMCs that shifted share from AA, when AA didn’t think that TMCs could influence carrier choice. And perhaps most importantly, thanks are owed to the airlines who have continued to support the established, efficient purchasing channels – Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and (to a slightly lesser extent) United Airlines. It is only due to those airlines policies that travel managers and TMCs had the opportunity to shift share. The reversal we have witnessed may be unprecedented in the North American airline industry (the closest similar action would be NW’s failed GDS fee in 2004). What comes next? AA will re-engage with the industry in an effort to regain lost share. However, the industry must continue to thank the suppliers that stood by us by continuing to give them share. Let this not be a short-term disruption but rather a long-term message that managed corporate travel has value, influence and relevance. Finally, let's be clear that AA has only formally reversed 1 specific tactic (restricting AAdvantage earning based on purchase path). There are still harmful programs that have yet to be reversed/revised, such AAdvantage Business only applying for direct purchases. There remains works to be done! #Airlines #Distribution #BusinessTravel #GBTA ASTA - American Society of Travel Advisors
