Yesterday, the Swiss coffee industry came together to launch the Swiss Sustainable Coffee Platform (SSCP), and we are thrilled to announce that ECOM Agroindustrial Corp. Ltd. is one of the founding members.  Aline Deniau from our global climate team and Renaud de Kerchove d'Exaerde, head of Coffee EME were delighted to attend this event. Lead For Ghana recently hosted a literacy workshop in three partner schools across Ghana. As ECOM Agroindustrial Corp. It’s Earth Day 🌏 and this year’s theme, Planet vs. Plastics, calls to advocate for widespread awareness on the health risk of plastics for the sake of humans and our planet. As part of our long-term collaboration with Starbucks on their “100 Million Tree Commitment”, we have worked on finding a solution to reduce the use of plastics in our seedling nursery. Through this ambitious tree project, we are really proud to have reduced the use of plastics by introducing the Paper pot (BioPegon® at Agropecuaria Popoyán S.A. to replace the typical polybags for transportation. Produced in a biodegradable paper bag made from corn starch, this technology has many environmentally friendly benefits: ✔️Allows an abundant, healthy root development ✔️Protects the roots during transport to the field ✔️Remains easy to use, mainly in areas of difficult access ✔️Reduces transportation costs Since the testing phase in 2019 to 2023, the plant production in paper pots has significantly increased from 1% to 66% in Guatemala which now represents more than 4.7 million trees and the equivalent of less plastic bags! Another climate smart solution used for this project are the reusable trays. In 2023, over 34% of the volume was produced through this technique in Guatemala, allowing us to completely move away from using polybags locally.
