The Int'l Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association is the global network for human rights of LGBTI people
Info
ILGA World – the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association - is a worldwide federation of more than 1,700 organisations from over 160 countries and territories campaigning for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex human rights. We want a world where the human rights of all are respected and where everyone can live in equality and freedom: a world where global justice and equity are assured and established regardless of people’s sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions and sex characteristics (SOGIESC). Established in 1978, ILGA World has ECOSOC consultative status at the United Nations. Our member organisations are based in our six regions: Pan Africa ILGA, ILGA Asia, ILGA-Europe, ILGALAC (Latin America and the Caribbean), ILGA North America and ILGA Oceania. Governed by an elected Board of 19 activists representing our global family, ILGA World is queer democracy in action!

LGBTI PEOPLE IN SPORTS: "GOVERNING BODIES MUST RESPECT THE RIGHT OF LGBTI PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE" During the 56th United Nations Human Rights Council, we highlighted how "many schools, sports governing bodies, and governments are prohibiting trans, gender-diverse, and intersex people from playing in categories based on their gender identity and/or sex characteristics; and subjecting them and other women and girls to invasive practices which may amount to torture or cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment." "The bodily integrity and autonomy of all women and girls engaging in sports needs to be safeguarded", we reiterated. #SouthKorea: ILGA World and ILGA Asia intervened in a landmark case, in which the Supreme Court will be soon called on to rule whether a same-sex partner is entitled to public health insurance coverage as his partner’s dependant. "We urge the Court to ensure that same-sex partners are able to access state benefits on equal footing.”
In a landmark case, ILGA World and ILGA Asia filed a joint amicus curiae brief urging the NHIS to extend state benefits to same-sex partners. The Supreme Court will soon rule on whether a same-sex partner is entitled to public health insurance coverage as their partner’s dependent, as is the case for heterosexual couples. “Denying health insurance coverage to same-sex couples solely based on who they are violates the principles of equality and non-discrimination,” ILGA World and ILGA Asia stated. Our Senior Officer on UN Special Procedures and SDGs, Guillermo, participated in a webinar with the Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, Graeme Reid, trade unionists and civil society leaders on the rights of LGBTI workers. The event, "Forward despite the backlash: LGBTI rights and the freedom of association," delved into the complexities of advocating for LGBTI rights in the face of increasing global restrictions on freedom of association and expression and the current anti-LGBTI backlash.
