As Paris celebrates with the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games, behind the scenes, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and #Paris2024 Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games have committed to take action to protect nature. This is the first @Olympics to take place since the establishment of Sports for Nature (S4N) - a joint initiative of IUCN, the IOC, the United Nations Environment Programme , the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity , and Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy. S4N aims to deliver transformative action for the environment, by enabling sports to champion nature and contribute to its protection and restoration. It provides a game plan for sporting events — at all levels — to accelerate action and inspire others to protect nature. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3WiWfrz

Once every four years, the world comes together, putting aside our differences in the name of sport. This year’s #Olympic Games is no different, with almost 200 countries, 10,500 athletes and countless fans gathering in Paris and tuning in from around the world to celebrate the amazing athletes of our time. As we unite around #sport, it is important for us to remember and protect the natural world that make this all possible. And indeed, it is through sport – and those like you and me who love it – that we can champion #nature and contribute to its protection and restoration. That is why IUCN is a proud co-developer of the Sports for Nature Framework. This framework was recognised as part of the Paris Agreement for Sport and Sustainable Development, and will help the sporting community halt and reverse #biodiversity loss and damage to the natural world. After all, we all depend on nature to sustain our health and to provide spaces to enjoy our favourite sports. As we gather to enjoy this year’s games, let us remember the ultimate race, one that is necessary to ensure our #planet continues to thrive.

IUCN and FAO sign joint agreement to facilitate data sharing to reach #GBF Target 2. The agreement will help governments in reporting on ecosystem restoration and subsequent biodiversity, socio-economic, and #climate impacts. Through this agreement, IUCN and FAO will work together to improve the reporting progress against GBF Target 2 by sharing data and building synergies between two key tools: IUCN’s Restoration Barometer and FAO’s Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM). IUCN and FAO will pilot the protocol in select countries, with the goal of scaling-up an improved monitoring and reporting methodology to support parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. https://bit.ly/3WgMFpg

🌍 With over 700 attendees at the Africa Regional Conservation Forum, the event concluded with a call for inclusive, cross-continent action to protect nature. 🌿 Just months before, the Mexico, Central, and Caribbean Forum highlighted urban biodiversity as a key challenge. The IUCN Regional Conservation Forums offer a platform for Members to discuss challenges, learn about the upcoming IUCN vision, and prepare for the 2025 #IUCNCongress in Abu Dhabi. 🤝 Read more about the Collaboration and Camaraderie at the IUCN Regional Conservation Fora in Unite for Nature, the IUCN Members’ Magazine #Conservation #IUCN #RCF #UniteForNature

When a place like India’s #Khangchendzonga National Park (pictured) gets UNESCO #WorldHeritage status, what does it mean? It tells us that these sites are valuable to humanity in a way that transcends language, culture, and time. Since 1972, IUCN has proudly been the official advisor on #nature to the World Heritage Committee. Through field visits and extensive research, we help determine if specific locations can be granted World Heritage status, and we monitor how current sites are being conserved. Yesterday, the Committee’s 46th session (#46WHC) just opened in New Delhi. IUCN is now in India supporting the process, which builds on our study of 7 potential new sites and our #StateOfConservation reports of 40 existing sites. As the Committee makes its decisions, we look forward to collaborating with it and our Indigenous peoples and local community partners to preserve places of #OutstandingUniversalValue for all future generations.

IUCN calls for increased representation and focus on nature #conservation at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee. IUCN is the official advisor on nature to the World Heritage Committee, which is the governing body of the Convention and is made up of 21 of the Convention’s signatory States Parties, chaired this year by India. Over the past year, IUCN has undertaken extensive research and on the ground visits, to provide technical recommendations on the evaluation of potential new sites for inscription on the World Heritage List, and on the state of conservation of existing natural World Heritage sites including those on the List of World Heritage in Danger. The United Nations High-Level Political Forum (#HLPF) takes place each year. This key event measures progress against the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals (#SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda, allowing the world to take stock and change course. In delivering IUCN’s statement at the general debate, I emphasised how #ClimateChange will gravely impact #FoodSecurity and push up to 130 million into extreme poverty by 2030. The business-as-usual approach to food and water systems must change to respond to the challenges facing humanity. We need to transform these systems to value and conserve nature while safeguarding the wellbeing of current and future generations. Indeed, we must repurpose finance for #biodiversity and the #climate. We must redirect #HarmfulSubisides. We must apply #NatureBasedSolutions, and ratify the #HighSeasBiodiversityTreaty. We must do much more than today. As we move towards the #SummitOfTheFuture, let us remember that scientific evidence will be essential – but what is needed most is the political will to act.
