African Water Facility’s team is on a fact-finding mission to #Madagascar to identify areas of interventions for inclusive urban sanitation under the Africa Urban Sanitation Investment Initiative – a new financing window of the Facility. The team met with Mr. Ravokatra Fidiniavo, Minister of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and his team to discuss challenges and opportunities to improve urban sanitation in the country. Madagascar is one of the countries with the lowest access to sanitation in the world. Urgent measures are needed to achieve SDG6.2 - access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all. #africanwaterfacility

At the session on "Innovative Financing for Climate-resilient Water and Sanitation Investments", speakers and participants discussed the funding gap in Africa's water sector and emphasized the need for reforms, particularly in strengthening water governance. Key takeaways: 💧- Strong governance is required for a better enabling environment. 💧- Lack of access to water and sanitation impact people especially women, the disabled and youth. If shared prosperity is our goal, reforms are needed or we will create inequalities. 💧- The availability of money must not dictate the availability of water. 💧- The private sector is a catalyst for accelerating current progress, not THE solution. 💧- There is no amount of donor financing that will meet the need and close the gap. Globally, there are 2.5 billion people without access to clean water, and 4.5 billion without access to safely managed sanitation. 💧- We need alternative models of financing that reduces reliance on debt. A model for water that is based on borrowing and debt is not feasible for Africa. 💧- Part of the actions is developing a pipeline of bankable (investible) projects that are capable of generating revenue stream. #AfDBat10WWF #africanwaterfacility #Bali2024
