3GPP Release 18 insight 🚀 3GPP R18 Freeze: The Future of IoT with Release 18 🚀 The first version of the 5G standard was R15. Subsequent releases R16 and R17 further supplemented and improved the 5G standard. Release 18 marks the beginning of a new era, namely the 5G-Advanced era, referred to as the 5G-A era (also known as the 5.5G era). Here’s why it matters: Uplink enhancements: R18 MIMO continues on the evolution of multi-antenna technology to facilitate uplink and network coverage, for example, by introducing multi-panel uplink transmission and up to rank 8 transmission to improve the XR experience. Coverage expansion: by introducing the smart repeaters, it can not only amplify and forward the received signals but also receive side control information from the Gnb (gNodeB). Application expansion: based on the RedCap initiated in the R17, the R18 will focus on the #eRedCap will lower complexity and power consumption, target to reduce the bandwidth to 5MHz and peak speed to 10Mbps facilitating 5G to a broader application landscape. AI/ML Utilization: integrates AI/ML (Machine Learning) to air interface thus improving the network operational efficiency and saving energy for the network usage, paving the way for an intelligent network evolution towards 6G.
