♻️ Our #CIRC_FoodPack project partners Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV and SUEZ have conducted a study on flexible packaging waste. Written by Nelly Freitag, Johannes Schneider, Virginie Decottignies, Tanja Fell, Esra Kücükpinar, and Martin Schlummer, the article "Waste Study on Flexible Food and Non-Food Packaging: Detailed Analysis of the Plastic Composition of European Polyethylene-Containing Waste Streams" sheds light on the complexities of recycling flexible packaging waste in Europe. 🔬 The study shows that even PE-rich fractions contain significant amounts of other materials that complicate the recycling process. It also highlights the prevalence of multi-layer and multi-material packaging, particularly for food products, which introduces high levels of foreign materials into recycling streams. These findings are crucial for the development of more recyclable packaging and optimised recycling processes, especially for closed-loop recycling of food packaging. CIRCULAR FoodPack
Herstellung von Verpackungen und Behältnissen
EU funded project to enable the circular use of high-quality plastics in flexible packaging food industry
Info
The project Circular FoodPack is targeting the circularity of food packaging (dry food such as packed creamer, cocoa and coffee powder) as well as personal (e.g. face masks) and home care packaging (e.g. detergents, wipes). The project partners investigate newly developed Tracer-Based and Sensor-Based Sorting systems which allow for reliable sorting with new tracers and detection mechanisms. Once sorted, the packaging material will be washed, deodorized, the layers delaminated, deinked, dissolved and purified with the CreaSolv® Recycling Process and mechanically recycled. The recycling strategies and generated secondary (raw) materials will continuously be assessed with regards to food and environmental safety, social acceptance, quality, processability, economic feasibility and legal compliance. The recyclates will be incorporated into new high-performance mono-material food packaging that is following eco-design principles and will be easy to recycle at post-consumer stage. A true material cycle is created, contributing to the EU ambitions of a carbon-neutral society by 2050!

On 5 - 6 of June we had our #Circ_Foodpack General Assembly in Belgium 🇧🇪, where the whole consortium was able to meet in person. It was great to see everyone face to face again! During our GA, we presented our progress so far and major achievements, as well as the challenges we have faced. The meeting was very interesting as our project is at a crucial stage where all efforts are converging. More collaboration is taking place and all the work is coming together seamlessly. 🤝 The large-scale sorting trials of our Tracer-Based sorting technology and the trials of our recycling cascades have been completed, providing us with the data to be analysed and presented at the end of the project. The final results will be presented at our final stakeholder event in Brussels on 28 November. 📅 Stay tuned and mark your calendars! 🔬During our time in Belgium we were also able to visit Steven De Meester's lab at Universiteit Gent. In this lab the deinking and delamination processes used in our project are being researched and tested. In particular, the challenge of readsorption of pigments during the deinking of post-consumer material, resulting in coloured PE recyclate, is being investigated. ♻️ Efforts to improve the lifecycle sustainability of plastic products have major economic and environmental implications. But how do products and the transition to a more circular economy affect society? Social Life Cycle Assessments (S-LCA) address this very question! As guidelines for conducting S-LCA are a relatively new topic, it is great to see research being done in this area: "Guidelines on the selection and inventory of social life cycle assessment indicators: a case study on flexible plastic packaging in the European circular economy"! 👉 https://ow.ly/9UUB50RBa7k Among the authors of this incredible scientific publication, we are proud to have Anna-Sophie Haslinger and Sophie Huysveld as our #Circ_FoodPack project partners. Thank you for all your hard work! 🤫 Secret tip: You can find other relevant scientific publications on our website 👉 https://lnkd.in/d4Dt5MuB #circulareconomy #EUfunding #horizon2020 #plasticsrecycling #circularplastics #foodsafety
I am happy to announce that our publication is now online available! 🚀 It is aimed at practitioners and provides guidance on how to select social indicators and collect inventories. With emerging technologies leading the transition from linear to circular economy, there is an urgent need to address social aspects in more depth. However, the prioritisation of indicators often appears arbitrary. In this paper, we adhere to the principles of social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) and provide guidelines for selecting and inventorying social indicators. Our case study focuses on the development of flexible packaging within the European circular economy.🌱 This research is part of the CIRCULAR FoodPack project. #Sustainability #Publication #CircularEconomy #Lifecyclesustainabilityassessment #CIRC_FoodPack #Horizon2020
