🥳 We were delighted to welcome so many authors, friends and Brill colleagues to our editorial summer party yesterday to celebrate 300 years of Kant! After a warm welcome by Carsten Buhr, Manuela Gerlof and Maurits van den Boogert, guests were able to chat with our editors, browse beautiful book displays, and join a guided tour of our building. Philosopher Lea Ypi from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) gave a keynote lecture titled "Kant on Revolution," followed by a Q&A with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and DIE ZEIT journalist Katharina Teutsch. A new Kant museum in Lüneburg was the subject of curator Tim Kunze's presentation, and Kant-themed merch was raffled off, too. Throw in a fantastic buffet, gelato and drinks, plus some sugary pop tunes, and we had all the ingredients for a perfect summer day! Big thanks to everyone who came, and to all the organizers! #DeGruyterBrill #SummerParty

⚽🎨 "Art narrates football, finding the special moment that contains both past and future." With the Euro 2024 quarterfinals fast approaching, dive into our interview with Manuel Neukirchner, founding director of the German Football Museum and curator of "In Motion," a spectacular overview of football in modern European art. From Dalí and Magritte to Paul Klee and Banksy: 175 works on virtual display remind us that the beautiful game is also a mysterious one. Kevin Schneider and Jennifer Harris spoke to Neukirchner about the new exhibition and its accompanying catalogue, published by Deutscher Kunstverlag. We're still buzzing from Beijing! Last week, De Gruyter and Brill exhibited together for the first time at the Beijing International Book Fair. To start things off, we celebrated at a reception with organizer CNPIEC and our partner presses, authors, editors and librarians. We also received an award for our contribution to the POD development in China and signed a strategic agreement as a joint company with Commercial Press. Ben Ashcroft gave a presentation at the PubTech Conference, while Maurits van den Boogert presented on S2O at the Beijing International Publishing Forum and spoke at a panel on globalizing Chinese scholarship through books, organized by Princeton University Press and Peking University's Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences. What's more, editors Wendy Ding and Feifei Liu organized meetings with key partners in journal publishing. Congratulations to the entire team, including Steven Chong, Lervinia Swee, Peng Guo 郭鹏 and everyone else involved in this hugely successful event! #DeGruyterBrill #BeijingBookFair #AcademicPublishing #China #APAC

🎧 Today our podcast WAGNIS WISSEN looks at another dark chapter of German history. Philosopher and historian Matthias Häussler (Ruhr University Bochum) dissects the first genocide of the 20th century—Germany's brutal colonial extermination campaign against the Ova-Herero, Nama and Oorlam people of Namibia that claimed tens of thousands of victims 120 years ago. Marking the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth offers a chance to reflect on the racial disparities that continue to haunt academia. Last year, librarians Ana Ndumu (University of Maryland), Shauntee Burns-Simpson (The New York Public Library) and Marlena Okechukwu (Hennepin County Law Library, Minneapolis) wrote a blog post for us about the history of Black librarianship and the Supreme Court's ban on affirmative action. In light of current debates around academic freedom, book bans and the role of DEI initiatives on campuses, their piece is more relevant than ever for anyone in higher education who wants to ensure a more equitable future: https://lnkd.in/eJ6Zs_7y You can read Ana's original study on diversity and equality in LIS practice here, in our journal Libri: https://lnkd.in/eXMfJHZG #DeGruyterBrill #DeGruyter #Blog #Libraries #Librarians #Juneteenth #BlackHistory BLACK CAUCUS OF THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, American Library Association, College of Information Studies (INFO), University of Maryland
