It brought together space innovators, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders to discuss and shape the future of the European space sector. 🌌 Event Recap: Spanning two days, the event featured four simultaneous conference cycles, each focusing on different aspects of the space industry: New Uses: Exploring the defense sector and NGO applications of space technologies. Innovation: New space disruptions and the future of orbital infrastructures. Economy, Politics and Financing: Discussing the economic landscape and funding opportunities within the space sector. Europe: Concentrating on European space market dynamics and support for new entrants. The Village: The Spacetech Village showcased up to 100 startups, highlighting the dynamic nature of the European space industry. This week, at KKR's SuperReturn LP reception in Berlin, I had the privilege of moderating a fireside chat with Marco Fuchs, CEO of German space champion OHB, and Thomas Reiter, one of Europe’s most distinguished astronauts and a Brigadier General in the German Air Force. We were also thrilled to welcome Josef Aschbacher, Director General of the European Space Agency - ESA, who joined us for a truly remarkable evening.   Hearing firsthand from Thomas about his 350+ days in space was incredible, and together we delved into the 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞, 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞’𝐬 pivotal role, the 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞, and the increasing relevance of the space industry in 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. In a nutshell: space has never been more important.   Investments in space are critical to staying at the forefront of innovation, economic growth, and global competitiveness. That's why, at KKR, we're dedicated to supporting companies driving innovation, and our recent investment in OHB exemplifies how strategic partnerships between private equity and family businesses can help accelerate growth in the space industry.   Fifty-five years after Neil Armstrong's historic Moon landing, I asked Marco and Thomas about their predictions for Mars colonization. It was promising to hear that with continuous technological advancement, international collaboration and the pioneering spirit of humanity it may be closer than we think. Yesterday's news on Musk's breakthrough achievement of his Starship rocket making the first ever ocean landing is therefore likely one of many exciting future milestones we will all get to witness - more to come, stay tuned!
