How Digital Product Passports can transform businesses? 🤔 Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are set to provide detailed, real-time information about a product’s lifecycle detailed, real-time information about a product’s lifecycle. 💡 They aim to help businesses cut costs by optimizing resource use and streamlining supply chains. DPPs will also open doors to new business models like Product-as-a-Service and refurbishing programs, boosting profits and fostering customer loyalty. ⬇️ Find out more about the benefits of DPPs and their potential in driving sustainability and transparency.
Have you met Elise Vermeersch, Elena Fernández Cubillo, and Kees Baldé from United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)/SCYCLE - Sustainable Cycles? They are leading the project's stakeholder engagement and training activities, which have two main goals: to define the necessary information for a Digital Product Passport (DPP) and to promote the use of DPPs and RE-criteria within the value chain. How South America is addressing #eWaste challenges? 🌎 In the Andean region, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia have been actively working to improve #eWasteManagement practices. ▪ Colombia has updated regulations to include devices like e-bicycles and scooters, cutting registration fees for small businesses. ▪ Ecuador has a framework classifying e-waste into categories, aiming to reduce risks from informal recycling sectors. ▪ Peru has built successful partnerships between formal e-waste handlers and cooperatives of former informal workers, promoting safer practices. 🤝 Voluntary e-waste collection initiatives are becoming increasingly popular as well. Europe's Right to Repair: a game changer for #eWaste? Ruediger Kuehr, head of the SCYCLE - Sustainable Cycles, notes that some brands avoid promoting #repairs "because they want to control this business." The EU's new Right to Repair Directive aims to change this by making repairs more accessible and affordable. Here’s what else this Directive brings: 🌍 Environmental impact: by encouraging repairs, we can reduce the staggering growth of e-waste. 💶 Economic benefits: estimated €176.5 billion saved by consumers over 15 years. 💡 Changing attitudes: making repairs fashionable and encouraging product longevity. Have a look at Agbogbloshie, Africa's largest electronic waste dump and one of the world's most polluted places ⬇ Every year, around 5.1 billion kg of used EEE/e-waste is shipped globally. Of this, 3.3 billion kg (65%) is uncontrolled transboundary movement from high- to middle- and low-income countries. Transboundary e-waste shipments are a big challenge, especially for countries with little to no facilities to handle them. This is impacting the environment and people's health. It's crucial to have clear rules to separate illegal from legal shipments and ensure e-waste is managed safely. 📌 For more insights on e-waste shipments see the Global E-Waste Monitor: https://lnkd.in/e7u2jvwp #eWaste #environment #pollution #wastemanagement #sustainability

The rise of vaping and its #eWaste impact 📈 Vaping is booming! The e-cigarette market hit over $22 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow by 31% annually until 2030. In 2022, more than 844 million vapes were sold, creating over 42 million kg of e-waste. Why is this an issue? Vapes contain plastic, lithium-ion batteries, heating elements, and circuit boards. In 2022 alone, these devices included around 130,000 kg of lithium. Recycling helps conserve this valuable material, reducing the need for mining and preserving natural reserves. ➡ Want to know more about managing e-waste? 🔋 Did you know that batteries and other electricity storage devices are not classified as EEE (Electrical and Electronic Equipment)? Most legislation around the world treats them as separate waste streams due to their unique end-of-life treatment needs. Still, #battery recycling is vital because of hazardous materials that are harmful to the #environment. Proper #recycling prevents these materials from ending up in landfills and helps recover valuable resources. 📌 Curious about how different regions manage battery waste? Check out the Global E-Waste Monitor to learn more: https://lnkd.in/e7u2jvwp
