Retelling the story of life
Om os
Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics study how interaction between genes and microbes determine biological evolution. The Center is directed by Professor Tom Gilbert and is part of the GLOBE Institute. The Danish National Research Foundation has funded the establishment of this new basic research center at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics will develop and implement state of the art 'omics and associated computational techniques, and address through experimental and theoretical research, four fundamental questions about life on earth: - WHAT is the relationship between a host’s genome and the functional and taxonomic makeup of its associated microbial metagenome? - DOES this relationship explain ongoing ecological and evolutionary processes in the host? - COULD this relationship provide an alternate explanation to some of life’s big transitions? - HOW have we humans exploited this relationship?

Publication alert 📣📣 Exploring diet and gut microbiome connections in viverids, we show that associations tend to be driven by specific links between diet items and gut bacterial genera, rather than communities as a whole, suggesting that specific diet items drive selection for specific gut microbes in wild animal hosts! This work was led by Emilia Rolander Arfaoui and Malou B. Storm and it is my first last-authored paper!!! Huge thanks to Michael Poulsen, Kristine Bohmann, Phumlile Simelane, Jason Denlinger, Celine Dias, Ana Gledis da Conceição and Ara Monadjem for all the support. 🦠Please watch or rewatch this inspiring talk by our dear colleague Seth Bordenstein from the One Health Microbiome Center at Penn State! Thanks again for joining the #Applied #Hologenomics #Conference Seth and sharing all of your insights 🤩👏
Director of the One Health Microbiome Center, J. Lloyd & Dorothy Foehr Huck Endowed Chair of Microbiome Sciences, Professor of Biology and Entomology
The #holobiont framework recognizes the host and its associated microbiome are a unit in the hierarchy of biological organization. Consequently, mathematical theory, experiments, databases, organizations, and lexicons are modernizing to embrace a synthesis that prescribes prominence to hierarchically nested, though not necessarily integrated, bionts and genomes. In this closing keynote seminar at the 2024 Applied Hologenomics Conference in Copenhangen hosted by the Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics, I discuss the progress and confidence in the growth of the holobiont disciplinary matrix, from scholarship to summits and financial support. I look backward to viewpoints raised by Carl Woese and look forward to contemporary tools for studying holobiont and #hologenome systems. I also identify priority research and resource topics that conventionalize holobiont scholarship. ProTip: Watch on 1.5x speed to save yourself the hour.

We're excited and proud to have researcher Aviâja Lyberth Hauptmann and her exciting research in #Inuit #health and #diet as part of our team here at Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics 🤩 Read the article about her exciting research in Danish below 🦠
Men hvad fylder ellers for grønlænderne?

📢 Fresh from press! 📢 🌟 A Practical Introduction to Holo-Omics 🌟 #HoloOmics is revolutionizing how we study complex biological systems by examining multiple molecular data layers from 🐾 #hostmicrobe systems 🦠, or holobionts. In this article, we dive deep into the generation, analysis, and integration of omics data. Our focus is on optimizing data generation and the strategic integration of various omic layers. Key Highlights: 🔬 Step-by-step guidance on generating and analyzing omics data. 🧩 Techniques to understand individual omic layers before integration. ⚖️ Critical decision points and challenges in the holistic study of host-microbiota relationships. Looking forward, this approach has immense potential in investigating host-microbe interactions, paving the way for groundbreaking animal-related #biosolutions 🐾👨🔬. By refining our methods of data integration and analysis, we can unlock new insights into these intricate relationships, driving forward innovations in health 💊 , agriculture 🌱, livestock production 🐔🐟 , and beyond. Thanks to amazing collaborators: Iñaki Odriozola, Tom Gilbert, Morten Limborg and Antton Alberdi and the HoloFood project! 👏 Feel free to explore a bit more about holo-omics in the linked article 🤠 https://lnkd.in/d38_g9pF
