2024 Ankola (Karnataka) landslide

On 16 July 2024 at approximately 8:30 AM local time, a landslide occurred in Shirur, Ankola in Uttara Kannada in the Indian state of Karnataka.[1][2][3] The landslide was caused by torrential rains, resulted in at least eight deaths,[4] more than three are estimated as trapped under debris and in nearby Gangavalli River.[5][6]

Eight people, natives of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu died in the landslide and three more people are missing.[7][5][4]

Arjun

Arjun (34),[8] a lorry driver from Kerala. The accident occurred while he was resting on the road hit by a landslide with the lorry he was driver. Search for Arjun and the lorry he was driver is still continuing in the Gangavalli River.[9][10][3][11] During the search for him, other bodies were also found.[12][13]

Arjun Rescue Operation - Timeline

  • 16 July 2024 (Day-1) : Arjun, a native of Kerala, went missing with the truck he was driving on July 16 in a landslide near Ankola in Uttara Kannada, Karnataka. Arjun was carrying acacia trees from Balgaum in Karnataka.[14][15]
  • 17 July 2024 (Day-2) : The hill fell into the nearby Gangavalli River, including a large amount of soil was washed away. A search was conducted under the soil and in the nearby river. The search was conducted by Karnataka Police, National Disaster Response Force and Karnataka Fire force.
  • 18 July 2024 (Day-3): Two more bodies were found during the search. Dead bodies of lorry drivers Murugan and Chinna, natives of Tamil Nadu were found. With this, a total of seven bodies were found.
  • 19 July 2024 (Day-4): Arjun, a lorry driver from Kozhikode, was involved in this accident. The last signal received from Arjun's lorry was from the GPS crash site. People's representatives and others intervened and intensified the search. Meanwhile the bodies of 10 people were found in Shirur accident.
  • 20 July 2024 (Day-5): The search continued on the fifth day after the accident. Three more including Arjun were reported as missing. The officials got information about the accident and intensified the search. A radar probe was conducted underground Arjun's family asked the army to come to the rescue. Heavy rain and wind hampered the rescue operation. The search ended too late.[16][17]
  • 21 July 2024 (Day-6): The search continued again. Urgent petition was filed in Supreme Court seeking intervention to find Arjun. Meanwhile, a group of the army reached Shirur. A search was made in the river. Nothing was found.[18]
  • 22 July 2024 (Day-7): The search was resumed on land and in the river. In rescue Navy's help has arrived. Inspection included Deep Search Detector. Small Signals were received and Army confirmed that the lorry was not on the coast. After searching again. Nothing was found.
  • 23 July 2024 (Day-8) : The body of a missing woman was found. Karnataka High Court's intervention in the matter. Notice were isued to Central and State Governments. Because of high flow of river and rain the search stopped.[19][20]
  • 24 July 2024 (Day-9): Arjun has been missing for 9 days. Using modern technology search started in the river. A huge earthmoving machine was also brought to the accident site. This was a crucial turning point. Navy's state-of-the-art technology spotted spots of lorry in the Gangavali river through scanning. According to eSignal, these locations were inspected. The Karnataka Revenue Minister said that the lorry was found in the river Confirmation. This was confirmed by the police of the lorry driven by Arjun.[21][22]
  • 25 July 2024 (Day-10): Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda earlier confirmed that a lorry had been found at the bottom of the river.[10][8]
  • 26 July 2024 (Day-11) : Excavation of river side soil using long boom excavator. The revenue minister Krishna Byre Gowda said the truck was located 20 meters from the shore. Couldn't find, search stopped for the day.[23][3]
  • 27 July 2024 (Day-12) :A search in the overflowing Gangavalli River becomes impossible and it is decided to bring a naval pontoon from Goa. Nothing could be seen that day. Stopping the search.
  • 28 July 2024 (Day-13) :The drone inspection found that the lorry was 132 meters away from the shore on this day. Fishermen led by diving expert Ishwar Malpe arrived from Kunthapuram to search again. After sinking eight times, he failed. That day's search ended. Could not found Arjun and lorry.
  • 29 July 2024 (Day-14) : The search for Arjun, the missing truck driver, was unsuccessful on the 13th day on 28 July 2024. Government of Karnataka It has been decided to suspend active search operations until the Gangavalli River is suitable for diving or until new machines are arrived.[24]

Response

The fishermen from Karnataka, a Malayali volunteer group, Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force of Karnataka, Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services, Indian Navy, Indian Navy's scuba diving group, Karnataka Police and medical teams are involved in relief efforts, which resumed on the morning of 18 July after being halted on 16 July due to heavy rainfall.[25][26][27][28]

Siddaramaiah, the chief minister of Karnataka, visited the spot. Aid was announced to the families of people died in this landslide.[29]

A. K. M. Ashraf,[30] MLA from Manjeshwar (State Assembly constituency) (Kerala),[31][32] and Satish Krishna Sail, MLA from Karwar Assembly constituency (Karnataka) camped at the site and participated in and coordinated the search operation for those buried under at the disaster site.[33]
