From the forest to tires and from Nokia to Nürnberg! 🌲 🏙 Our R&D experts Anne Ojala and Teemu Soini visited the German rubber industry conference DKT 2024 in Nürnberg, Germany this week. At the fair, they introduced our newest concept tire, the Nokian Tyres Green Step Lignin. The Green Step Lignin is the first tire ever made with UPM BioMotion™ Renewable Functional Filler, in which the natural raw material lignin is turned into a refined, high quality, renewable chemical product. The secret of the wood-based renewable filler material is in its particles, which are specifically designed to provide strength and grip alongside a significantly improved sustainability performance. In the Nokian Tyres Green Step Lignin all fossil carbon black in the tire’s sidewalls is replaced by the new renewable raw material, that has the potential to replace even more of the carbon black currently used in tire production thus lowering carbon emissions in tire manufacturing. 🎉We did it! 🙌 The first tire has been produced in our new factory in Oradea, Romania! 🎉 We couldn't be prouder of the Nokian Tyres team reinventing tires, and how they are made, over and over again. Like a tire consists of different components that come together to form a whole, a team is made of individuals who are stronger together. 🤝 The team in Romania has worked hard to achieve this important milestone on schedule for commercial tire production to start in 2025. Replacing carbon black in tires with a wood-based raw material? Our new concept tire Nokian Tyres Green Step Ligna is the first tire ever made with UPM BioMotion™ RFF, a fully renewable wood-based lignin raw material. In the Green Step Ligna all fossil carbon black in the tire’s sidewalls is replaced by the new renewable raw material, that has potential to replace a significant part of the carbon black currently used in tire production thus lowering carbon emissions in tire manufacturing. To create the Nokian Tyres Green Step Ligna and to further increase sustainability in the tire industry, we have partnered with another Finnish sustainability forerunner UPM - The Biofore Company. “We are constantly working on innovations that advance us towards our target of increasing the share of recycled or renewable raw materials in tires to 50 percent by 2030. With the concept tire we demonstrate the usability of the groundbreaking new raw material in tires. Exciting news from the US! We have opened a new finished goods warehouse in Dayton, Tennessee! 🎉 ✔ Located adjacent to our US factory ✔ Spanning 32,500 square meters ✔ Can hold hundreds of thousands of tires ✔ Inaugurated last week ✔ Tires are shipped to Nokian Tyres’ nine-warehouse network across North America, from which we serve dealers in the United States and Canada ✔ Marking the completion of a ramp-up process at our US production facility “The opening of our finished goods warehouse marks the completion of a growth process that took us from a 60-member launch team to a 500-colleague workforce,” says Nokian Tyres Dayton Factory Operations Director David Korda. “We could not have reached this point without great dedication from our employees, and we are also grateful for the support we have received from the community, our customers and our colleagues around the globe.” Tire production began at the US factory in 2020 and since then, we have expanded its operations by increasing production capacity, growing the team, and enhancing the capabilities to produce North American-specific tires. When we opened our US factory in Dayton, Tennessee a team of experienced Nokian Tyres tire experts trained the new team members onsite. One of these trainers is Senior Production Operator Marko Äijälä. Now Marko is facing new challenges, as he is leaving the US for Romania and helping the recruits at our new factory in Oradea at the start of their Nokian Tyres journey. One of the most important tasks is making sure the work culture is similar throughout the company: "What I appreciate about the Finnish work culture is that it is very democratic, and you can say things the way they are without sugarcoating. The groundbreaking ceremony of our new factory in Oradea, Romania was held in May 2023 and a lot has happened in the year since then at the site! 💪   We are progressing in schedule with the project, and the production building, the mixing building and the finished goods warehouse are all taking shape as planned. The machine installations began in January. Recruitment and training of the new Romania Nokian Tyres team for starting up the production has been a priority. Happy International Day for Biological Diversity 🌾 🌿 🌷 🌱 To raise awareness and remind us all that also small actions matter, our team in Finland had the chance to volunteer to remove invasive alien species from the Nokia factory area during their workday. Spending a sunny day together removing lupins, the team, armed with shovels and gloves, gathered in the garden of the former factory director's house Hakkalinna, Hakka Palace. Built in 1925, the house still stands behind the factory by the river. The garden houses plants that are valuable for biodiversity, and the trees provide local birds and bats shelter and a nesting site. The lupin is an invasive alien species in the Finnish nature. Invasive alien species are a threat to native plants and animals, and thus one of the major causes of biodiversity loss. We weeded out lupins from the garden also last year – and were happy to see that this year there were significantly less of them! Go team! 💪 #nokiantyres #sustainability #biodiversity #biodiversityday
