  • 💡 Investments in clean energy have surged by 40% since 2020. But do we have the skills to sustain this growth?  In this NEW article by Lamia Kamal-Chaoui, read about the green-skills gap and how the technology to achieve net zero is at our fingertips. But the pressing question is: do we have the right skills in the right places? Key data: 🟢 The UK has only 3,000 trained heat pump engineers, but an additional 24,000 will be needed within six years.  🟢 There is a significant regional disparity in green-skilled jobs, with areas like #Paris and Greater #London boasting around 30%, compared to less than 18% in Normandy and 20% in Northern Ireland. 🟢 Electric vehicle sales have skyrocketed—one in five cars sold in 2023 were electric, compared to just one in twenty-five in 2020. • 🌍 How can the Łódzkie and Lubelskie regions of Poland leverage their unique assets to attract talent, investments, and visitors while advancing sustainable and inclusive development? 🤝 During a recent visit to #Poland, a delegation from the OECD - OCDE, including Margaux Tharaux, Michael Flood, and Ewa Białogłowska, engaged with over 130 national, regional, and local stakeholders. The visit involved 9 roundtable discussions, 6 site visits and bilateral meetings to chart strategic pathways for these regions to grow. ⛵ In Łódzkie, hosted by the Urząd Marszałkowski Województwa Łódzkiego, stakeholders discussed overcoming the challenges of talent retention in a region facing rapid depopulation. The importance of vocational training, attracting investors and ensuring a good quality of life came to the fore. 🦌 In Lubelskie, in partnership with Marshal Office of Lubelskie Voivodeship, discussions highlighted the region’s dual identity as a borderland— both a challenge and an asset when it comes to connectivity and geopolitical significance. It was also highlighted how predominantly agricultural regions may develop in a green direction, simultaneously promoting sustainable tourism. The visit's findings will inform the OECD - OCDE's analysis and advice as part of the “Rethinking Regional Attractiveness for Green and Inclusive Globalisation” project funded by the European Commission. • 🌍 How can regions like #Alentejo and #Norte, Portugal, unlock their full potential, attracting talent, investors and visitors while promoting sustainable economic growth? 🌱 An #OECD delegation, including Claire Charbit and Margarida Bandeira Morais, recently visited these Portuguese regions as part of the project "Rethinking regional attractiveness for a green and inclusive globalisation," supported by the European Commission's DG REGIO. 📊 This initiative aims to provide policymakers with robust statistical analyses presented in regional attractiveness compasses and detailed policy advice to improve international attractiveness and sustainable development. 🤝 In both regions, we spoke to regional policymakers, mayors, businesses, associations, universities and other stakeholders. The focus was on the challenges and best practices in terms of attracting investment, talent and visitors in the region, as well as coordination mechanisms between local actors and different levels of government. We had the pleasure of talking to the President of CCDR Alentejo, António Ceia da Silva, and the President of CCDR Norte, António M. Cunha, about the strategic priorities and main challenges in each region. 🏙️ In Alentejo, we also visited the Ponte de Sôr Municipal Aerodrome, where we met the Mayor and Deputy Mayor and learned more about an example of attracting companies and creating a cluster in the region. In Norte, we visited the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, which is the result of an INTERREG Europe project and a collaboration between Portugal and Spain, as well as EDIGMA, a local exporting company and market leader in interactive digital experiences and digital signage. 📝 The information provided will allow us to delve deeper into the issues and develop case studies with policy advice for inclusive and sustainable development in each of these regions which will be published in Portuguese and English.
