❓ How to decarbonize heating and cooling? ❔ CLIMACT is really proud of our study with Resolia on the decarbonization of the production of heat and cold in Brussels which has guided the Task Force Energie 2050 (Bruxelles Environnement - Leefmilieu Brussel, Sibelga, and BRUGEL, le régulateur bruxellois pour l'énergie) in its recent recommandations. Our study indicates that Brussels' path to decarbonization will involve: 🔹 A combination of individual and collective solutions 🔹 Emphasis on detailed, neighborhood-level analysis 🔹 Ensuring affordability and efficiency 📈 Significant investments in technology and infrastructure, particularly in building renovations and the development of low-temperature heat networks, are essential. 🌿 The study highlights several pathways to phase out fossil fuels (mainly natural gas in Brussels) by increasing the use of heat pumps, geothermal energy, aquathermy, and biogas. 👉 Various innovative solutions to harness energy from diverse sources such as air, underground, sewage, incinerators, and even ponds will be tailored to the unique needs of different neighborhoods. This initiative aligns with Brussels' 2050 climate neutrality goal and demonstrates that while the road ahead is challenging, this study provides a clear pathway to a sustainable and resilient energy future for Brussels. The National Industry Council of France (CNI) has unveiled decarbonization roadmaps for 50 CO2-emitting sites, including Lhoist. The next phase involves ADEME launching project tenders to support France's 2030 decarbonization plan. A good reminder that without volontary efforts to reduce our level of material consumption, #energyefficiency will probably be at least partially offset by the #reboundeffect, thus compromizing the #energytransition This rebound effect can be both: * Direct: if you insulate your house better, you will probably want to increase room temperature * Indirect: if you actually reduce your #energyconsumption, you may spend your saved money in new activities (new trips, etc.) It all boils down to this version of the Kaya equation that I always use to introduce the ABC's of #carbonaccounting (or any form of environmental assessment, really): Impact = (Impact/Emission)*(Emission/Technology)*(Technology/Demand)*(Demand/Population)*Population where: 🌍 (Impact/Emission) is a physical property of a substance that can't be changed, like the fact that methane is a #GHG about 30 times more powerful than CO2 ☁️ (Emission/Technology) describes how clean a technology is. It comes from #engineering, can be improved with #ecodesign, and that's where you will find energy efficiency 🤖(Technology/Demand) is the techological content used to satisfy your needs. E.g. to move from A to B, will you walk, cycle, take a car, a plane, etc. Here we have to chose between #hightech and #lowtech 💶 (Demand/Population) is a level of your wealth, how much you consume. Will you want to travel short or long distances for your holidays, will you heat up your house at 17, 19, 21°C? With this equation, the risk of rebound effect is obvious: if you use more of a technology, you may cancel the benefits of its higher performance I like to think that, combined with proper education on #sufficiency, an appropriate #pricesignal can reduce this phenomenon. If #energyprices increase, we pay more attention to not wasting it. With the right #fiscality, low tech solutions, sober ways of life (in terms of material consumption) can be encouraged. Of course, it's not a silver bullet. It's one of many tools to solve a systemic problem. But considering that, for the moment, #decoupling and #greengrowth are not working, we will probably need to consider that option seriously. It's not necessarily a bad thing though 🙂 If we increase the price / fiscal pressure on resource consumption, and reuse the money to reduce #inequalities and the cost of labour, we can promote job intensive activities (and business models) more centered around social interactions, communities, culture, services, and less on material possession. For instance (I'm exagerating but you get the idea): walking through a neighbour region or a country, meeting the locals, discovering their towns through their eyes, could definitely be encouraged against the option of teleporting to the opposite side of the world and staying in a hotel with swimming pool and buffet 😉 Unforgettable memories, I can tell 🤗 https://lnkd.in/eavATJA5
