We are very proud to announce that DiNA Science has received the award for Best Basic Communication for under 35 years old at the 34th edition of the National Congress of the Sociedad Española de Fertilidad awarded to Anna Martín Insa. David Cotan presented the oral communication and received the award on her behalf. Anna Martín Insa's work, entitled "The frequency obtained of high-risk reproductive matchings between couples does not explain the inequality in the application of carrier genetic screening (CGP) between IVF-DON and IVF-PROPIOS" shows the need to inform and carry out carrier testing studies in all couples, as the risk of having children with recessive diseases can reach up to 12% in the set of pathologies studied. Although in Spain this preventive test is mostly indicated and performed in donation programmes, the results obtained suggest a reorientation in the current practice, promoting an inclusive approach that allows risk reduction to all couples with a reproductive project. Scientists have discovered that bacteria can enhance the fertility of host insects, which could have implications for disease control and crop security. The study found that a bacterium called Wolbachia, which is commonly used to control insect-borne diseases, can also increase the fertility of its host insect, the fruit fly. The researchers found that the bacterium increases the number of eggs laid by the fruit fly, as well as the proportion of eggs that hatch into larvae. The findings suggest that bacteria could be used to control insect populations and ranges, which could be an effective mechanism for crop security in the face of the changing climate. However, the researchers caution that more research is needed to understand the evolutionary potential of bacteria and their impact on ecosystems. They also note that bacteria are evolving in real time, so it is important to understand where these trajectories are going before releasing them into new ecosystems.
