Today we welcomed Sean Randolph from the Bay Area Council Economic Institute to Cork for the Leeside launch of "Growth and Transformation Economic Ties Between the San Francisco Bay Area and Ireland" - a seminal report on the relationship between the Bay Area, California and Ireland. University College Cork and Ursula Kilkelly welcomed us to their campus for a roundtable discussion focusing on the report's findings and the future relationship between Cork and City and County of San Francisco. Many thanks to the Lord Mayor of Cork Dan Boyle and the Cork City Council - Comhairle Cathrach Chorcaí for their welcome and reception. This year marked the 40 year anniversary of SF and Cork being sister cities and the report highlighted the success of this relationship. The report, amongst many other findings, highlighted the reciprocal eagerness of both regions to further grow our relationship. The job losses announced at Viatris present a challenging situation for all involved and we empathise with those affected by this unfortunate situation. It offers some help that no job will be lost until 2028, and in recent times, #Cork has continued to experience significant business growth and investment in the pharma and life science sectors. The demand for skilled and talented employees remains high across the region, and we would be very optimistic that those affected will find new employment opportunities,” Cathal McSweeney, Director of Public Affairs at Cork Chamber. “The extensive pharma and life sciences ecosystem in Cork, encompassing R&D, education, and the business network, remains strong. In addition, the site occupied by Viatris in Little Island has a long history in serving the pharma industry and we would be confident that it offers great potential for future development. Cork Chamber is dedicated to working closely with the entire sector to maintain its resilience and adaptability here in Cork, supporting ongoing employment and economic growth.” https://lnkd.in/dbPDPgUV

Chair of CORIF (the Cork Offshore Renewable Industry Forum) Catherine Sheridan welcomed today’s piece in the Irish Examiner on the potential of Ireland’s offshore wind sector: “Ireland has immense potential to develop a thriving offshore wind sector and Cork is ideally placed to become the first of the national hubs for the offshore renewable energy sector. As William (Bill) Duggan and James Carton state in today’s Irish Examiner, the development of Ireland’s ports, including the Port of Cork Company Ltd., must be fast-tracked to ensure the required infrastructure is put in place now to facilitate the development of the renewable energy sector into the future." “Growing Cork’s offshore renewables capacity will unlock significant social and economic benefits for Ireland as a whole. Investment in critical infrastructure must be prioritised by Government now – the estimates indicate any investment will be more than repaid to the Exchequer over the coming years and will be critical if we are to reach our climate targets and attract new clean industries.” https://lnkd.in/ey2rVVFT
Offshore wind could be worth €69bn to Ireland if harvested correctly

Cork Chamber, alongside Cork Business Association, the Cork branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, the Vintners' Federation of Ireland (VFI) in Cork and the Restaurants Association of Ireland, has expressed disappointment that the Government is to further delay a decision on funding for the Cork Events Centre. We are calling for the Government to bring the decision to the first Cabinet meeting after the summer recess - the Events Centre represents a critical piece of infrastructure for a rapidly growing city like Cork and its funding must be prioritised. https://lnkd.in/dEd2ZqAv Rob Horgan | Conor Healy | Cathal McSweeney

Cork Chamber welcomes the announcement that the Port of Cork Company Ltd. is set to receive €38.4 million in funding under the European Commission's Connecting Europe Facility for Transport. This is a positive boost to Cork’s development as a hub for offshore renewable energy and an important step forward in the expansion of the sector in Ireland as we seek to meet our national climate and renewable energy targets. However, if Cork is to reach its full potential in this sector and capture the full value of offshore renewables, additional funding from Government will be needed to bridge the remainder of the €70 million gap to complete these infrastructure projects. Bridging this funding gap will be critical to reaching national climate targets in the coming years, and will support the delivery of additional projects in the pipeline nationally to support the achievement of our 2030 climate targets. The Port of Cork is the only port in Ireland with planning permission for the critical infrastructure needed to support the offshore renewables sector. The funding announced today will help support the construction of two quay berths at Ringaskiddy deep water port, vital infrastructure to ensure safe maritime access and to meet the needs of the offshore renewable energy industry. Building an offshore renewable energy hub in Cork presents the economic opportunity of a generation for the region – and will also support the achievement of our important national climate targets in the years ahead.
Irish projects are set to receive over €112 million in funding from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport. As part of the #CEFTransport funding announced: ♦ €73.8 million has been allocated to Dublin Port Company, Ireland's largest port, to increase the berth capacity in order to handle projected future demand. ♦ €38.4 million has been granted to the Port of Cork Company Ltd. to build two quay berths at its Ringaskiddy deep water port, improving maritime access and supporting the offshore renewable energy industry. From sliotars to soccer balls. An historic day at Páirc Uí Chaoimh as the Irish women’s soccer team played and defeated France 3-1. A stunning game and fantastic show of skill.

We warmly welcome today’s announcement that Cork has been chosen to host the 2025 European Maritime Day, organised by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, Cork City Council - Comhairle Cathrach Chorcaí and the European Commission.
