  • New Arts Creativity Fund for People living in Emergency Accommodation A new fund to support access to arts, culture, and creativity for people in emergency accommodation has been launched in Galway City. The Emergency Homeless Accommodation Creativity Fund will enable people in emergency accommodation in Galway City to participate in its vibrant creative and cultural life. The fund will support people experiencing homelessness in Galway City to access creative activities by providing small individual grants for music or art lessons, workshops, or to purchase art materials or musical equipment. The grant will be administered by COPE and Simon, in conjunction with their key workers. Homelessness remains a pressing and persistent issue in Galway City. The lack of affordable, accessible accommodation in recent years has resulted in longer stays in emergency accommodation before successful resettlement. Galway City Council, with the support of Creative Ireland, is working to foster positive, community-focused interventions which improve well-being, build resilience, and combat social exclusion for those experiencing homelessness. Access to the arts brings significant benefits for health and wellbeing, serving as a catalyst for personal development, self-expression, and social inclusion. This fund builds on the successes of recent arts projects supported by Galway City Council through their Creative Ireland fund. These projects engaged with residents at COPE Galway and Galway Simon, and included a new mural project at Fairgreen Hostel with the artist Tracy Moca, which demonstrated the appetite among residents for engaging in art activities Supported by Galway City Council, through the Creative Ireland Programme, Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, in collaboration with COPE Galway and Galway Simon Community. Read more at www.GalwayCity.ie If you are at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness there are a number of services that may be able to provide assistance to you. • Droichead an Dóchais, Galway’s iconic pedestrian and cycle bridge, has been shortlisted for a prestigious international engineering award. The bridge, which opened in May 2023, is among just eight projects in the running for the International Bridge Project of the Year award at the upcoming New Civil Engineer Bridges Awards in London. This represents further recognition for Droichead an Dóchais, which offers a safe, comfortable crossing of the River Corrib for thousands of people each day and has already become a widely recognised landmark in Galway. The shortlisting of Droichead an Dóchais recognises the extensive work on the project of Galway City Council, consultant engineering firm AtkinsRéalis and principal contractor Jons Civil Engineering Company Ltd. The other bridges shortlisted for this award are in the United Arab Emirates, USA, Canada, India, France and China (two projects). The overall winner will be announced at a ceremony in London on 18 July. The need for a new pedestrian and cycle crossing of the River Corrib was identified in the Galway Transport Strategy. Consultants Arup led the options appraisal and planning application process of this project, and Seán Harrington was appointed as the lead architect. AtkinsRéalis led the detailed design and construction stages, and Jons Civil Engineering were appointed as the main contractor. Thompson of Carlow fabricated the steel structure of the bridge, which was transported to Galway and lifted into place in December 2022. The bridge, then known as the Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge, was opened to the public ahead of schedule in May 2023. This development was funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority’s (NTA) Active Travel Programme and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), co-funded Border, Midland and Western Regional Operational Programme, administered by the Northern and Western Regional Assembly.

  • Solutions to air pollution in Galway City are being explored as part of an innovative project combing art, community education and citizen action. As part of ‘The Air We Share’ project, seven monitors will record air pollution in Westside with the data made available to the local community to ‘make the invisible visible’. Three Galway City Council artists in residence will produce ambitious, sensory visual representations of the data, in collaboration with the local community, over the next 12 months. The project will be launched at Westside Arts Festival on Saturday 13 July. The Air We Share will explore sources of air pollution in Westside, as well as proposing creative solutions to address them. The project is a measure of the Galway City Council Climate Action Plan, adopted last Februay. Westside has been designated a Decarbonising Zone, with the aim of a 51% reduction in Greenhouse Gases by 2030. The Air We Share project complements the Galway City Net Zero Cities Programme, which supports cities to identify and overcome root causes which hinder climate action. The project’s €250,000 budget is funded by Creative Ireland’s Climate Action Fund, ‘Agents of Change’, to build awareness around climate change and empower meaningful behavioural changes inspired by art. More information including a call out to artists: www.TheAirWeShare.ie This project is led by Galway City Council in partnership with Galway Arts Centre, University of Galway, Westside Resource Centre, and Galway Culture Company.
