Embracing a New Year: Reflections on Sacrifice and Growth As the new year unfolds, I reflect on the journey I've embarked upon - not just as a start-up founder but as an individual striving for personal growth amidst the tumultuous waves of life. I am deeply grateful to the mentors, guides, friends, and family whose unwavering support and wisdom have been my guiding stars in 2023. Your presence has been a source of strength and inspiration, and I am profoundly lucky to journey alongside each of you. The previous year was undoubtedly challenging, pushing the boundaries of what I thought was possible, both professionally and personally. Amidst steering Bonatra through its paces and facing some profoundly personal losses, I found solace and strength in a universal practice: The Art of Sacrifice. As the Greek philosopher Epictetus once said, "No great thing is created suddenly." Through the small, consistent acts of sacrifice, we pave the way for significant change and growth. I started this journey purely as a personal challenge, giving up habits that seemed impossible at one point. I embraced a different form of sacrifice each month, consciously choosing to let go of habits and comforts. January (Alcohol): I had been cutting down on this habit over the last few years, and it wasn’t too difficult to give it up. February (Non-Veg): I had built a habit of consuming non-veg 2 times a day on average over the last years, was pretty difficult to give up. March (Rice): Brought up in a South Indian family, I probably consumed more rice than water growing up :) was super difficult. April (Sugar): Had tried and failed multiple times before; the benefits are well known, but was pretty difficult to give up. May (All forms of Wheat): Also meant giving up all kinds of packaged food, was difficult but most beneficial health-wise. Have been struggling with IBS for 30 years, most effective solution. June (Netflix & Amazon Prime): Was easier than I thought. July (Self-Pity for Failures): Have been trying to look at the positive side of misses and failures, avoid cribbing etc. It is extremely difficult, and I have not got to 100% yet August (Stance on God and Prayer): Opened my mind to spiritual solace and introspection. Most difficult, most fulfilling. September (Gossiping): Comes naturally to all humans and takes up unnecessary mental bandwidth. Very helpful. October (Outside Food): Pretty easy, do yourself a favour and eat mindfully. November (A Personal Habit): Letting go of a private habit was very helpful for mental health. December (Use of Phone/Devices at Night): Apart from other things, I have more time with my daughter now. What started as simple monthly challenges became life lessons that reshaped my outlook and lifestyle. The path of sacrificing simple habits is tough, yet the rewards are liberating and profound. Let's continue to grow, innovate, and inspire together; here's to a year of immense learning, transformation and fightback!
