    Meet Saraswati Bhoi, a beacon of change in Niladunguri Village, Sambalpur District of Odisha. Saraswati has transformed her community’s sanitation practices, steering it towards a healthier and cleaner future. Through her unwavering dedication, she has spearheaded the transition from single-pit to twin-pit toilets, ensuring 100% toilet coverage and retrofitting for all households. Her efforts have not only eliminated open defecation but also propelled Niladunguri on its ODF+ journey, while inspiring neighboring villages to follow suit.     From the state of Madhya Pradesh, we bring you the story of Maya Bai's grit and commitment to the community. Maya Bai braved the pandemic to enable access to community toilets and inspired fellow sanitation workers to undertake services with proper equipment. Over the last 35 years, she has been a dedicated sanitation professional, overlooking the cleaning and maintenance of her ward. During the pandemic, amidst reluctance from other sanitation workers to enter high-risk residential areas, Maya Bai stepped forward for the daunting task of single-handedly maintaining the community toilet. Her courage earned her the gratitude of the local authorities and the admiration of the residents.     From the lanes of Kumhari, Chattisgarh, we bring to you Haneshwar’s storya dedicated Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) Operator. Haneshwar’s passion for cleanliness and hygiene go hand-in-hand with his work at the FSTP, where he emphasizes on the importance of cleanliness and hygiene for healthy working standards. A B.Sc Biotechnology graduate, today, he leverages his technical background to look after the complete maintenance of the FSTP site, including gardening, pond maintenance, screen chamber maintenance, coordination with the FSTP drivers, and more. Braving the stigma and hazards associated with his job, he prioritizes the safety and well-being of not only himself, but his fellow workers by ensuring proper maintenance of the FSTP. He believes that if you demonstrate hygiene then you can inspire others to follow suit.     Valluri Kranthi’s story is one of breaking barriers, being undeterred by the glass ceiling, and championing widespread accessibility. Born in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, she fulfilled her childhood dream of being a civil servant and is now the Municipal Commissioner of Karimnagar, steering the city's sanitation initiatives and driving transformative changes in the way the city managed its sanitation services. Under her leadership, the town overcame its sanitation challenges in more ways than one. It welcomed a well-structured septage management mechanism, optimizing the capabilities of a Sewage Treatment Plant for co-treatment of faecal sludge, a City Level Sanitation Plan, awareness campaigns, grievance helplines, and much more.     As Head - Practice (Governance & Services) & Associate Dean - School of Systems and Infrastructure at the Indian Institute of Human Settlements, Kavita Wankhade is making a transformative impact on urban sanitation in Tamil Nadu, bridging the academia-industry divide and fostering a holistic understanding of urban development challenges and solutions. With 17+ years of dedicated experience, her work has championed inclusive sanitation, emphasizing the welfare and occupational safety of sanitation workers. Kavita has witnessed a positive shift in the sector's priorities where the focus has transitioned from merely achieving access, to a comprehensive approach, with a welcome emphasis on the "entire sanitation value chain". Under her leadership, the Tamil Nadu Urban Sanitation Support Programme (TNUSSP) has scaled up Faecal Sludge Management and implemented City-Wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) in Trichy, influencing policy changes and driving innovative campaigns like ‘Kakkaman’. Kavita's efforts have fostered a holistic approach to urban development, ensuring no one is left behind. Her vision is to make safe and inclusive sanitation a reality for all cities and towns in India.     The NFSSM Alliance participated in the 10th World Water Forum, held at Bali, Indonesia, that brought together leading experts, policymakers, multilateral institutions, academicians, and practitioners addressing global issues in water and sanitation.  NFSSM Alliance partners brought insightful perspectives around the thematic areas of priority set for the Forum, sharing some of India’s best practices and innovations with the world. Dr. Mahreen Matto, Team Lead – National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), Professor Srinivas Chary Vedala, Director – WASH Innovation Hub (WIH) & Professor – Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), and Dr. Y. Malini Reddy, Director - Athena Infonomics brought out interesting insights while speaking at sessions such as "Climate Resilience and Inclusive WASH with a Particular Focus on Inclusive Sanitation Management and Service Delivery for Marginalized Groups in South Asia", "Strengthening Resilience: Capacity Building for Gender-Inclusive Proactive Disaster Risk Reduction", and “Finance Delivery Models that Serve the Unserved”, among others. The Alliance also showcased India’s strides in Sanitation at the World Water Forum Exhibition, through the “Collaborative Action Towards Inclusive Sanitation” stall – a gallery walk that witnessed the presence of delegates and participants from over 10 countries, including Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Public Works and Housing - Indonesia, Aun Dhyaib Abdullah, Water Resources Minister – Iraq, among others.  To accelerate the discourse on disaster resilience within sanitation, the event also saw the launch and dissemination of the Disaster Risk Reduction framework and knowledge product- “Building Back Better: Disaster Resilient Sanitation in South Asia” that deep dives into sustained and adequate WSH interventions as a crucial component of DRR strategies in disaster prone areas. Representatives from the NFSSM Alliance, World Water Forum South Asia Regional Convener - Women for Water Partnership, SaciWATERs, Asia Water Council (AWC) – K water, Oxfam in Bangladesh), and International Water Management Institute (IWMI) (Nepal) were present at the launch.
