🌍 In an era where sustainability is paramount, the construction industry is not left behind. Today, let's delve into one significant advantage of mass timber structures: their ability to store CO2. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗢𝟮 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆. But how exactly do we achieve this? We've been in the Mass Timber Engineering field since 2007 and here are our three key strategies: 🎯 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻: We analyze building requirements to utilize timber most efficiently, ensuring each piece serves its purpose without excess. 👷🏼 𝗗𝗳𝗠𝗔 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵: By adopting Design for Manufacture and Assembly, we streamline the entire construction process, reducing CO2 emissions. 🏗️ 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗳𝗳-𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: These methods not only diminish carbon emissions but also enhance on-site efficiency and cleanliness, slashing assembly times. Curious about other ways to promote sustainability in construction? Or perhaps you want to discover exactly how much CO2 can be stored in a piece of timber? Check out our article for the formula, additional insights, and yes — that's a photo of our boss embracing a red spruce column. True passion for the job, right? ❤️ 🔗 Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/dQG7hhuv What measures do you consider to boost sustainability in your projects? 🌧️ 𝗪𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗻! 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝗦𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳... Here's Our Story from the 17th International Architecture Exhibition at Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia A few years ago, we teamed up with the innovative architects at Cave_bureau to create the "Obsidian Rain" pavilion, a project that brought both wonder and monumental challenges. Among the myriad hurdles we faced, two particularly stood out: 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘃𝗲'𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 despite the steel net’s deformation from the weight of the stones, and the 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. The pavilion was designed to feature 1,686 stones, each meticulously suspended by a cable. 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 (Dlubal Software | RFEM) 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 (Rhino | Grasshopper). This critical integration allowed us to efficiently update the FEM model and accurately calculate the length of each cable, ensuring each stone hung perfectly. But a new challenge unfolded the night before the exhibition opened. ⏳𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝟭,𝟲𝟴𝟲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. At around 9PM, the technical department approached our director, Franco, and said “Piva, you’re not going to make it. It’s okay, go home to sleep. You guys did your best, you can finish next week.”. But 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆. Fueled by determination and teamwork, every member present (architect Kabage Karanja (riba) included) that night doubled their efforts, and together, 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰. Bamboo it’s one of the 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 used in the building industry. In 2018 we used this durable material together with VTN Architects to engineer this amazing structure at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition in Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia, and we are still amazed by the result of this project! 𝗙𝗨𝗡 𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗧: Do you know how bamboo is treated in Vietnam to ensure its longevity? The bamboo is coated with mud and manure, then smoke. This traditional method makes the bamboo pieces incredibly durable and strong.
