Das Europäische Parlament ist mehr als nur seine Abgeordneten. Dahinter stehen Tausende von Menschen, die Tag für Tag daran arbeiten, die EU für ihre Bürgerinnen und Bürger noch zugänglicher und transparenter zu machen und ihre Funktionsweise weiter zu verbessern. Wenn so viele Menschen zusammenarbeiten, kann es jedoch schnell unübersichtlich werden. Deshalb sind Verwaltungsorgane wie das Präsidium unverzichtbar.

Welche Aufgaben hat das Präsidium?

Es ist Zeit, wählen zu gehen! Bei der Europawahl, die dieses Jahr vom 6. bis zum 9. Juni stattfindet, gestalten Millionen Unionsbürgerinnen und -bürger mit ihrer Stimme die Zukunft der Europäischen Union mit. Das Europäische Parlament ist das einzige direkt gewählte EU-Organ, und die Europawahl ist eines der größten Demokratieereignisse der Welt. 2004 war ein wichtiges Jahr für die EU: Im Zuge ihrer bislang größten Erweiterung bekam sie zehn neue Mitgliedstaaten – und neun neue offizielle Arbeitssprachen. Der 1. Mai 2004 war geprägt von Freude, Einheit und grenzenlosen Möglichkeiten. Anlässlich des 20. Jahrestags dieses geschichtsträchtigen Ereignisses tauchen wir in dieser Folge ein in die Geschichte der EU.

Die Europawahl – kurz erklärt: Wie funktioniert das Wahlsystem?

Der transatlantische Sklavenhandel ist ein dunkles und leidvolles Kapitel der Menschheitsgeschichte. Über 400 Jahre fielen ihm mehr als 15 Millionen Menschen zum Opfer. Die Sklaverei wurde zwar abgeschafft, doch rassistische Ideologien prägen bis heute diskriminierende Denk- und Verhaltensweisen. Initiativen wie der „Internationale Tag des Gedenkens an die Opfer der Sklaverei und des transatlantischen Sklavenhandels“ der Vereinten Nationen oder die EU-Themenwoche gegen Rassismus und für Vielfalt sollen darauf aufmerksam machen, Gleichheit fördern und eine Gesellschaft schaffen, in der alle Platz haben.

Gedenken an die Opfer der Sklaverei und des transatlantischen Sklavenhandels

Alexei Nawalny war die bekannteste Stimme der russischen Opposition. Er kämpfte gegen Korruption und war leidenschaftlicher Kritiker des russischen Präsidenten Wladimir Putin. Am 16. Februar 2024 starb er unter mysteriösen Umständen in einer abgelegenen Strafkolonie in der russischen Arktis. Im Jahr 2021 hatte ihm das Europäische Parlament den Sacharow-Preis für geistige Freiheit verliehen.

Jedes Jahr am 15. März wird der Weltverbrauchertag begangen, der das Bewusstsein für die Rechte und den Schutz von Verbraucherinnen und Verbrauchern auf der ganzen Welt schärfen soll. In der Europäischen Union spielt das Europäische Parlament eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Wahrung der Verbraucherrechte. Bei über 450 Millionen Verbraucherinnen und Verbrauchern in der EU sind faire Behandlung, Transparenz und Sicherheit auf dem Markt unerlässlich. In diesem Podcast geht es darum, wie die EU die Verbraucherrechte schützt.

Werfen wir einen Blick auf die Geschichte dieses Mediums, das uns ein treuer Begleiter ist – und das vor langer Zeit sogar den Eiffelturm rettete.

Welttag des Radios

Im Jahr 2005 – am 60. Jahrestag der Befreiung von Auschwitz – erklärten die Vereinten Nationen den 27. Januar zum Internationalen Tag des Gedenkens an die Opfer des Holocaust. Das Wort „Holocaust“ stammt aus dem Griechischen und bedeutet „Brandopfer“. Es bezeichnet die Verfolgung und die anschließende Ermordung von sechs Millionen Jüdinnen und Juden in Europa durch die Nationalsozialisten und ihre Helfer. Zwischen 1933 und 1945 wurden auch andere Gruppen von den Nazis und ihren Verbündeten verfolgt, darunter Roma, Menschen mit Behinderungen, Angehörige slawischer Völker, Homosexuelle und Menschen mit bestimmten religiösen und politischen Überzeugungen.

Der Internationale Tag des Gedenkens an die Opfer des Holocaust

Der Daphne-Caruana-Galizia-Preis für Journalismus 2023 ging an ein griechisch-deutsch-britisches Konsortium, das die Ereignisse rund um den Untergang des Flüchtlingsboots Adriana untersucht hatte. Die Adriana war am 14. Juni 2023 vor der Küste von Pylos im Südwesten Griechenlands gekentert. Mehr als 600 Flüchtlinge hatten bei dem Unglück ihr Leben verloren. 
Der Journalismuspreis des Parlaments trägt zur Förderung der Grundsätze und Werte bei, die in der Grundrechtecharta der Europäischen Union verankert sind. Benannt ist er nach der maltesischen Journalistin, Bloggerin und Korruptionsbekämpferin Daphne Caruana Galizia, die 2017 ermordet wurde.

Am 10. Dezember 1948 verkündete die Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen in Paris die Allgemeine Erklärung der Menschenrechte. Diese Erklärung ist ein Meilenstein in der Geschichte der Menschenrechte, da in ihr zum ersten Mal die weltweit zu schützenden grundlegenden Menschenrechte festgelegt wurden. Sie wurde von einer Gruppe von Visionären mit unterschiedlichem beruflichem, kulturellem und religiösem Hintergrund verfasst. Sie arbeiteten in der kurz zuvor gegründeten Menschenrechtskommission der Vereinten Nationen zusammen. Die Erklärung wurde in mehr als 500 Sprachen übersetzt. Sie diente außerdem als Inspiration und Wegbereiterin für mehr als 70 Menschenrechtsabkommen, die weltweit oder regional dauerhaft gelten.

In diesem Bilderbuch geht es um die kleine Anna. Sie ist gerade in ein anderes Land gezogen, wird dort eingeschult und lernt die Landessprache durch den täglichen Umgang damit. Das Buch ist als Hörbuch und E-Book in den 24 Amtssprachen der EU erhältlich. Seine Zielgruppe sind zwar 3- bis 6-jährige Kinder, doch es ist auch für ältere Kinder geeignet, die das Lesen in ihrer eigenen oder einer anderen in der EU gesprochenen Sprache lernen.

Neue Initiativen für eine bessere Europäische Union

Bekämpfung der Diskriminierung von LGBTIQ-Personen

Bestäubende Insekten spielen eine tragende Rolle im Ökosystem. Doch überall auf der Welt machen ihnen der Klimawandel, der Verlust ihres Lebensraums, Schädlinge und Monokulturen das Leben schwer. All dies setzt wilden und domestizierten Arten von Bestäubern, die für uns und die Natur lebenswichtig sind, so sehr zu, dass ihre Bestände drastisch zurückgehen. Der EU ist das nicht gleichgültig: Sie setzt sich für den Schutz aller Bestäuber ein.

Die neunte Wahlperiode des Europäischen Parlaments stand im Zeichen der weltweiten Coronapandemie und des Kriegs Russlands gegen die Ukraine. Angesichts der Gesundheitskrise und der schwierigen weltpolitischen Lage legte das Parlament in dieser Wahlperiode den Schwerpunkt auf den ökologischen und digitalen Wandel, um die EU krisenfester zu machen und die demokratischen Werte zu stärken.

Die EU ist eines der waldreichsten Gebiete der Welt: Gut 40 % ihrer Landfläche sind von Wäldern bedeckt. Wir brauchen Wälder, damit wir gesund bleiben und uns wohlfühlen – und damit es der Erde gut geht. Wälder beherbergen viele Arten und sind wichtig beim Kampf gegen den Klimawandel. Die EU ist sich der Rolle bewusst, die die Wälder für unsere Zukunft spielen können. Deshalb verabschiedete sie 2021 die neue Waldstrategie für 2030.

Am 8. März ist Weltfrauentag – ein Tag, an dem die Erfolge von Frauen und ihre Rechte im Mittelpunkt stehen. Auch dient der Weltfrauentag dazu, die Öffentlichkeit auf bestimmte Themen aufmerksam zu machen, darunter die Gleichstellung der Geschlechter, der Kampf gegen Gewalt und Missbrauch an Frauen und das Recht, mit Blick auf Kinder selbst über den eigenen Körper zu entscheiden. Die Gleichstellung von Frauen und Männern entspricht den Grundwerten der EU und zählte von Anfang an zu ihren wichtigsten Anliegen. Doch noch immer ist dieses Ziel nicht vollständig erreicht.

Mit dem europäischen Behindertenausweis und dem europäischen Parkausweis für Menschen mit Behinderungen sollen die Hürden aus dem Weg geräumt werden, vor denen Menschen mit Behinderungen stehen, wenn sie in der EU verreisen. Diese Ausweise sollen den Inhaberinnen und Inhabern einen anerkannten Nachweis über ihren Behindertenstatus bieten, den Zugang zu Dienstleistungen erleichtern und Freizügigkeit und Gleichberechtigung in der EU fördern.

Als Genitalverstümmelung bei Frauen und Mädchen bezeichnet man jegliche Art der vorsätzlichen Veränderung oder Verletzung der weiblichen Geschlechtsorgane. Die Gründe sind dabei nicht medizinischer, sondern kultureller, religiöser und in manchen Fällen gesellschaftlicher Natur. Die Gesundheit und das Wohlbefinden der Frauen und Mädchen leiden mitunter massiv darunter, denn Genitalverstümmelung kann schwerwiegende Folgen haben – sowohl sofort als auch auf lange Sicht. Was wird also getan, um dem ein Ende zu setzen?

Keine Toleranz für Genitalverstümmelung bei Frauen und Mädchen

Krebs ist nach Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen die zweithäufigste Todesursache in der EU. Jedes Jahr wird bei fast 3 Millionen Menschen Krebs diagnostiziert, und jährlich sterben 1,2 Millionen Menschen daran. Für die Gesundheitspolitik sind zwar sind in erster Linie die EU-Staaten zuständig, doch der Kampf gegen den Krebs ist eine der Prioritäten der Europäischen Union.

Europas Plan gegen den Krebs

Die EU ist eine politische und wirtschaftliche Union mit 27 Mitgliedstaaten. Auch einige Drittstaaten haben Interesse an einer EU-Mitgliedschaft und bereits einen Beitrittsantrag gestellt. Derzeit gibt es neun Bewerberländer. Doch der Weg zur EU-Mitgliedschaft ist lang und der Aufnahmeprozess alles andere als einfach.

Wie funktioniert die Erweiterung der Europäischen Union?

Die EU setzt sich dafür ein, die Bildungschancen stetig zu verbessern und die Herausforderungen im Bildungsbereich zu bewältigen. Vor diesem Hintergrund soll der geplante europäische Bildungsraum für stärkere Vernetzung im Bildungswesen sorgen. Zu den Hauptzielen des europäischen Bildungsraums zählen mehr Zusammenarbeit und Mobilität im Bildungsbereich und die Schaffung eines integrativen Bildungswesens. Einer der Schwerpunkte dabei ist, die Hindernisse zu beseitigen, die der Lernmobilität von Studierenden und Lehrkräften im Wege stehen.

Bildungsförderung: Das tut die EU für die Lernmobilität

Um beim Wettlauf um die weltweite Vorherrschaft im Technikbereich mithalten zu können, brachte die EU 2020 eine Strategie zur Stärkung ihrer Industrie auf den Weg. Anschließend wurde die Plattform für strategische Technologien für Europa (kurz: STEP) vorgeschlagen, die dafür sorgen soll, dass sich die erforderlichen großen Investitionen tatsächlich tätigen lassen. Die Plattform baut auf bestehenden EU-Fonds auf und soll die EU innovativer, nachhaltiger und unabhängiger machen. Sie ist ein Vorläufer des Europäischen Souveränitätsfonds, der die Industrie weiter stärken soll.
