Bumi Armada Berhad's Mangrove Tree Planting Programme: Seeds of Tomorrow In celebration of International Mangrove Day on July 26, Bumi Armada Berhad (BAB), in partnership with the Global Environment Centre and Sahabat Hutan Bakau Kampung Dato' Hormat (SHBKDH), hosted an inspiring Mangrove Tree Planting Programme on July 23, 2024, at Tebuk Mendeleng, Sabak Bernam, Selangor. The event united 65 enthusiastic volunteers, including BAB employees, SHBKDH community members and dedicated GEC officers. Together, we covered 0.25 hectares of degraded mangrove area with 500 mangrove trees, including Rhizophora apiculata (bakau minyak) and Rhizophora mucronata (bakau kurap). This initiative is part of the Greening Malaysia Programme's '100 Million Tree-Planting Campaign,' which aims to restore our precious ecosystems and foster biodiversity. Mangroves are vital for coastal protection, offering natural barriers against shoreline erosion, coastal flooding and the impacts of strong winds and waves. Beyond their protective role, mangroves are incredible carbon sinks, playing a crucial part in our fight against climate change. Through this programme, we not only worked to restore the tidal ecosystem and the Sabak Bernam riverine, but also raised awareness about the invaluable benefits of mangroves. Our efforts directly support several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 13 (Climate Action) through enhanced carbon sequestration and climate resilience, SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by supporting marine life and biodiversity and SDG 15 (Life on Land) through the protection and restoration of natural habitats. Additionally, by improving local ecosystems, we contribute to SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), supporting livelihoods and food security in nearby communities. This initiative reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and our belief in the power of community action to drive sustainable change. In celebration of World Environment Day, Bumi Armada embarked on a series of initiatives to raise awareness on environmental protections among our employees. The events included a field trip to the Recovery Initiative Sustainable Eco-Facility (RISE) in Batu Caves, Malaysia, where waste recycling processes were observed. Partnering with Electronic Recycling Through Heros (ERTH), we conducted an e-waste recycling campaign, collectively donating over 300kg of office e-waste and 25kg of household e-waste for recycling. An awareness session presented by Alam Flora Environmental Solutions (AFES) further educated our employees on sustainable waste management and the importance of a circular economy. Bumi Armada Berhad and Department of Fisheries Pahang Collaborate for Beach Clean-Up and Marine Life Awareness Event In conjunction with World Environment Day and World Oceans Day, we are happy to share the successful completion of our most recent collaboration with the Department of Fisheries Malaysia Pahang, which took place on May 9 at Kampung Baru Beserah, Pahang. One hundred committed volunteers, including local fishermen, came together for this event with the shared goal of safeguarding and preserving our treasured marine environment. Our dedicated volunteers collected almost 180 kg of waste during their productive one-hour beach cleaning session. This initiative has been essential in increasing awareness of the value of marine conservation in addition to contributing to the beauty of our shoreline. Our programme proudly supports three crucial Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): - SDG 4: Quality Education: By educating participants and the local community about the importance of marine life and the detrimental effects of pollution. - SDG 13: Climate Action: Through proactive beach clean-ups, we are taking tangible steps towards mitigating the impacts of climate change and promoting environmental sustainability. - SDG 14: Life Below Water: Our efforts directly contribute to the protection of marine ecosystems, ensuring healthier oceans and a sustainable future for all marine life. On 19 April, Bumi Armada organised a delightful Hari Raya festive lunch to celebrate Eid Mubarak. The event was filled with smiles, laughter, and a strong sense of unity and joy. Everyone dressed beautifully, adding to the festive spirit and enhancing the amazing atmosphere of the occasion.   The variety of traditional food, including rendang, lemang, kerepek, kuih raya, and more, added flavors to our joyful conversations and strengthened the bonds within our team.
