NOW ONLINE: Our new report analyses five innovative, late-stage R&D projects currently in the antimicrobial pipeline. Taken together, these projects could save at least 160,000 lives each year by providing much-needed medicines to treat drug-resistant gonorrhoea, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, respiratory infections and invasive fungal infections. To achieve this, it is vital to ensure that comprehensive access and stewardship plans are put in place to ensure these newly developed drugs reach the patients who need them most – and stay effective for as long as possible. Moving pharmaceutical companies to expand access to their products in low- & middle-income countries
Over ons
The Access to Medicine Foundation is an independent non-profit organisation based in the Netherlands. We seek to transform the healthcare ecosystem by motivating and mobilising companies to expand access to their essential healthcare products in low- and middle-income countries. Over the past two decades, we have demonstrated the power of data, collaboration and persuasion to trigger action by the pharmaceutical industry and scale up access to products. Our tried-and-tested approach involves defining the actions that healthcare companies should take, analysing what companies are actually doing, and promoting best practices. To turn our insights into action, we engage with the companies we evaluate, as well as with stakeholders across the private and public sectors. Our power to make an impact has been proven in the case of Big Pharma, as demonstrated by the success of the Access to Medicine Index. We have now begun to further expand our scope and use our change-making model to move companies across a wider range of healthcare sectors. This encompasses core groups of companies across five sectors: Big Pharma, vaccine manufacturers, generic medicine manufacturers, diagnostic companies and medical gas companies. According to the World Health Organization, viral hepatitis is a major #PublicHealth challenge of this decade. Many people remain undiagnosed, and even when #hepatitis is diagnosed, the number of people receiving treatment remains incredibly low. This #WorldHepatitisDay, we highlight the key role #pharma companies can play in scaling up access to hepatitis treatment. By engaging in non-exclusive voluntary licensing, they can improve and speed up the availability of medicines in low- and middle-income countries #LMICs, while building manufacturing capacity that can be used for the future production of medicines. As part of our ongoing engagement with the #GlobalHealth community, our Research Programme Manager, Camille Romero, spoke at the 25th International AIDS Conference #AIDS24 hosted by the International AIDS Society. During a session focused on #HIV prevention, Camille highlighted the importance of incorporating insights from individuals with lived experiences in the development of new long-acting technologies. She also emphasised that pharmaceutical companies must prioritise access planning for low- and middle-income countries #LMICs as a key component in creating new HIV treatments and fostering prevention efforts. The session showcased the few long-acting treatments currently available, stressing the necessity of testing these treatments across all demographics, including children and adolescents, to ensure their efficacy and accessibility for all who need them. 📣 The deadline to sign the Investor Action on Antimicrobial Resistance (IAAMR) public statement has been extended until 31 December 2024! Following investor demand, IAAMR has chosen to extend the deadline for signing on to its public statement, which calls on world leaders and policymakers to reinvigorate efforts to combat #AntimicrobialResistance (AMR). IAAMR, alongside its investor partners, emphasises that #AMR presents a systemic risk to human health, economic stability and global financial markets. Without urgent action, AMR could lead to 10 million deaths annually by 2050 and cause a global economic loss of $100 trillion. With the second High-Level Meeting on AMR approaching in September 2024, it is crucial that policymakers take urgent steps to coordinate action and mitigate risk. Investors, take action now!
