    ๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐š ๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ซ๐ญ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ! ย  From 1-5 July 2024 the Advanced Course on Downstream Processing was organized by BioTech Delft (Yvonne van Gameren, Jenifer Baptiste) in the Applied Sciences building of the TU Delft. The aim of the course is to provide the tools for the participants to be able to quantitatively and systematically design an integrated downstream process. This course has been organised since 1989, the course leaders are Luuk van der Wielen TU Delft/University of Limerick and Marcel Ottens TU Delft. An international group of experts (Manuel van Leusden, Raquel Aires Barros, Reinoud Noordman, Jรผrgen Hubbuch, Alexander Hanke, Danielle Horneman, Rob Geertman, Michel Eppink, Beckley Kungah Nfor, PhD, Maarten Pennings and Matthias Wiendahl) from both industry and academia gave lectures to assure an optimal balance of practical knowledge and theoretical insight, which subsequently was trained by exercises, into the quantitative engineering aspects of bioseparations. There was a prize to win during this course, the Best Design Award 2024. The challenge is to work in a team of two in a case study, designing a downstream process. At the end of the week, the team with the best designed process wins. This case study was greatly supported by PhDโ€™s from the Bioprocess Engineering group of Biotechnology, Tim Neijenhuis, Meryl Copray and Mariana Carvalho. We proudly present the winners of this year: Aryo Nugroho (Wageningen University & Research) and Jan-Philip (JP) Prahl, MS (Invert, Dover US). The 24 participants in the course are from all over the world and work in the industry or at a university. โ€œIt was great to be able to participate.     We congratulate Michiel Michels for being awarded the NBV Zilveren Zandloper Education Award!๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰ Michiel is senior lecturer and research Biobased Chemistry at the Avans University of Applied Sciences. The prize was awarded by Jury chair Marรญa Suรกrez Diez and Jack Pronk representing the prize-sponsor Biotechnology Academy Delft. -- According the jury, Michiel Michels stands out for the breath and the depth of the activities he has lead and is involved in. A major point is the integration of research and education in applied teaching. For instance, he uses his research activities on PHA (Polyhydroxylalkanoates) to inspire students; at the same time this research benefits from the ideas generated by the students. His work on extracting flavonoids from orange peels and the collaboration with the company PeelPioneers is a great example of integrating real-life projects into education. The jury was impressed by the large number of programmes and initiatives he has developed (either by himself or in collaboration) in the last years. The jury found the projects related to molecular gastronomy for 1st yearโ€™s students very relevant as they motivate detailed explanations of the biological mechanisms involved in alginate production and utilization for spherification, milk fermentation and yoghurt production, or sugar glass production. Overall he has developed a large number of educational materials, and projects. In addition, sound pedagogical choices are made and approaches aimed at increasing studentsโ€™ performance and achievement of learning outcomes, an example is the use of student competition and gamification elements to motivate students. He has also contributed to education at the program level, by developing a multidisciplinary minor. The jury also underlined the development of online teaching materials, such as those of the Massive open online courses (MOOCs) and his contribution to international activities such as the international study weeks with Hogeschool Gent (Belgium).ย  -- We thank the members of the jury Peter-Leon Hagedoorn, Michel Eppink and NBV vice-chair Marรญa Suรกrez Diez for critically assessing all nominees and for selecting such a deserving winner. This years Zilveren Zandloper Prize was sponsored by Biotechnology Academy Delft and awarded during the NBV highlight session, part of #ECB2024 congress in Rotterdam, which the NBV proudly hosts. Come meet us at our booth! Every year, the Nederlandse Biotechnologie Vereniging awards the Zilveren Zandloper Innovation (odd year) or the Zilveren Zandloper Education (even year) awards. The prize consists of an statuette and a money prize of โ‚ฌ 2500,- and is awarded during the NBC. These awards are given to a person/entrepreneur or group of people/entrepreneurs that have successfullyย contributed to the field of biotechnology in either innovation or education.
