It’s the final countdown… 🎵   Just one more day to go! 🌟 Did you know that before becoming FENIX, our home building had another name? 🏢 Over a century ago (1923), before we began transforming into the FENIX Museum of Migration, our building was known as the San Francisco Warehouse (or San Francisco Loods). 🔙 Back to the Beginning In those days, our building was the largest warehouse in the world, serving as a storage and shipping hub for the Holland-America Line—the Dutch transshipment line. People from all over the world arrived and departed from our docks. 🌍🚢 ⚔️ A Historical Split During the Second World War, the Axis forces occupied the building. In 1944, before the collapse of Nazi Germany, our location was bombarded by the occupiers to prevent the Allied forces from using it. Although the building was restored after the war, a major fire broke out in the early 50s, collapsing the middle section of the building.💥 Rising From the Ashes 🔥 After the fire, our building was rebuilt into two separate buildings. From then on, the warehouses were called ‘Fenix I’ (currently our neighbour) and ‘Fenix II,’ our current home. When someone shares a story, they share a memory, and Rotterdam is a city built with stories. ✍️ 🏙️ ✨ Tours of Stories ✨ In collaboration with Verhalenhuis Belvédère, this World Refugee Day we organised a tour throughout Katendrecht that reveals and celebrates the migratory identity that shapes Rotterdam. What made this tour special was not just the local guides, but the mix of participants. Alongside local residents, many of those joining us were asylum seekers who shared their experiences and anecdotes. Together, people walked, talked, and shared their journeys, finding common ground in their different paths. ⭐ Last night, around 7,000 people joined the 15th edition of the Night of the Refugee, walking routes of 10, 20, or 40 km across five different paths in the Netherlands.   👟 Why Walking Matters? The Night of the Refugee highlights global crises and raises funds for people forced to flee their homes worldwide.   💬 Conversation Cards This year, in collaboration with Stichting Vluchteling, FENIX created a card game with 30 conversation cards. These cards feature questions like ‘What does home mean to you?’ and ‘When is someone considered a refugee?’ encouraging participants to listen and share thoughtfully.   Every participant on the Rotterdam - The Hague route received a deck of cards. We chatted with some walkers about their experiences with the journey and the conversation cards: ✨ "This was so fun! We've known each other for years already but we still got to know things of one another that we did not know before. You're asking each other questions you usually wouldn't ask." ✨ "The goal of this walk is to raise awareness. I can tell the question cards do too. By weaving together a collection of mops into a 305 x 430 cm tapestry that floats in the air, we invite fresh interpretations. FENIX Reaches Another Construction Milestone! 🌪️ 🏗️ A section the our roof will finally get a (rain)coat of glass panels, after spending several months uncovered. ☔ A Channel of Glasses ✨ The glass roof will border the perimeters between the inside of the museum and the outer viewing deck on top of our double-spiralled staircase, the Tornado. 🧩 255 unique panels The glass roof has a unique shape composed of 255 unique glass panels, each with its distinctive design. Together, these pieces puzzle a glass roof that seals the section between the roof and the outdoor area of the Tornado to keep you and the collection dry and cosy when you visit us in 2025. ⚙️ Parametrical Engineering Due to the complex shape of the building, our engineers relied on a specialized algorithm to craft customized designs for every panel, ensuring a perfect fit.
