We develop durable and easy to use patient monitoring systems for environments with limited resources. We All Health.

Over ons

GOAL 3 develops durable and easy to use patient monitoring systems for environments with limited resources. Through predictive algorithms we enable health workers to detect acute illnesses when they can still be treated. GOAL 3's vision is: We All Health The right to health is universal. We are all equal and every person should have access to healthcare irrespective of individual characteristics, race, religion or geography. Therefore, it is unacceptable that millions of people die every year from conditions which can be treated easily. Fighting this injustice is what motivates us and what keeps us up at night. The mission is to make healthcare fair and accessible for everyone. To achieve this mission, we identify and develop data-driven health technologies from a perspective of collaboration and fair-data. These technologies are combined into an integrated and easy-to-use digital tool for health workers. This will enable health workers to provide better care and improve health for all.

There is so much happening around us in life, that the stories of lives saved can sometimes seem unimportant. 💡 But the joy of a mother whose child is saved or the potential of a child whose life would have otherwise ended early, can serve to remind us of the importance of innovative technology in low-resource settings. 💪🏾 We are so proud to share stories like these, showing the impact that the IMPALA system is having in empowering health workers to save real human lives. This is just one of the many stories that we hear from the field every year. If you would like to know more about the impact GOAL 3 is making, make sure to follow us on LinkedIn. 👍

Introducing the least known part of the IMPALA system…🔐 🗃️ The IMPALA server. 🏥 When we talk about the IMPALA system we often talk about all the benefits of the monitors and the tablet. And for good reason, the monitor and the tablet are life-saving technology. 🔒 But the real secret behind the star players is our workhorse, The local IMPALA server, the brain of our system. Our server:  ➡️ Acts as the connection between the IMPALA monitor and app. ➡️ Securely stores the data of the patients on-premise, allowing the IMPALA app to showcase patient history for up to a week. ➡️ Stores additional anonymous information to inform healthcare facilities about the usage of the systems, so they can make data-driven decisions. 😁 In fact, when talking with healthcare facilities, administrators and doctors are very excited about the access to high-quality data the server provides, allowing them to better understand their systems, provide accurate reports, and improve the quality of care. 👩🏾⚕️The IMPALA system is changing lives in low-resource settings, and the IMPALA server and app play an important role in this. If you would like to know more about the IMPALA server and the system as a whole, be sure to follow us on LinkedIn for updates and check out the product page of our website where you can download our product brochure.👍

Exciting news from Malawi!🥳 We have taken another step forward in reducing pediatric mortality!  🚗This week our GOAL 3 Malawi team Bart Bierling, Martine van Eijk, and Alice Likumbo are based at Mangochi District hospital, installing 18 new monitors! 😀After 6 days of intense training, the health workers are now equipped and ready to use the IMPALA system. At the end of this week the monitors will be in full use by the staff. The monitors will be in various wards including: ➡️ 12 in the pediatric ward ➡️ 2 in the malnourishment ward ➡️ 2 in the under-5 clinic ➡️ 1 in the nursery room ➡️ 1 in the admission room 👩🏿💻 Furthermore, the nurses will get two tablets, which will provide a central overview of the wards, helping health workers be more proactive in their care.  These will be placed in the pediatric ward and malnourishment ward. 🌍 What we find very special is that the installation of these monitors was funded through GOAL 3 foundation. Last year we founded the GOAL 3 foundation to help support hospitals who recognized their need for the monitors, but who could not afford them. It is amazing to see the real-life impact the foundation is already having. If you would like to contribute to the life-saving monitors through the GOAL 3 foundation please reach out to us! 👍

Not only does IMPALA help save lives, it also helps reduce costs for patients. Want to know how?👩🏾⚕️⬇️ 🏥 In our recent implementation of IMPALA in Kapiri and Mchinji Hospitals in Malawi, both hospitals highlighted their increased confidence to care for patients they would have previously referred. For us, it was a welcome finding. Why? 1️⃣ Our goal is to empower health workers, and well, increasing their confidence to deal with previously referred patient cases achieves that very goal. It is extremely satisfying to see health workers' increased ability to do their job well. 2️⃣ Referrals are a big cost to a family: ➡️ Food and Groceries ➡️ Transport costs ➡️ Loss of ability to generate income Furthermore, referrals can lead to increased complications with the disease due to delays in treatment. ⛈️ Combined together these costs can form ‘catastrophic health expenditure’ which is when out-of-pocket healthcare costs place an extremely high financial burden on a family. 👶🏽 Malawi has made and continues to make progress in improving the quality of life within the country (see Malawi Vision 2063), but with still close to 70% of the country living below the international poverty line (less than $2.15/day) the ability to get quality care close to home can sometimes literally be a lifesaver. ⛑️ Our goal as a company is to help where it is needed most. And the small action of reducing referrals in a country like Malawi achieves exactly that. If you would like to stay up-to-date on the impact GOAL 3 is having, follow us on LinkedIn.👍

New algorithms for IMPALA? Presenting IMPALA 3.0 at the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive & Critical Care in Mexico 🇲🇽👶🏾 🧑🔬Last week at WFPICCS, William Nkhono, Margot Rakers and Job Calis, researchers of the IMPALA project got the opportunity to present results about IMPALA. 🧑💻Their work contributes to the creation and implementation of algorithms that earlier identify children that are at risk of deterioration as well as assessing factors that affect monitoring in practice. Translation – helping us ‘predict’ when a child's condition will get worse, and understanding how to best implement this in real-life. The research presented included: ➡️ An examination of which factors are associated with deterioration in children.  ➡️ ️Comparisons of the effectiveness of existing predictive models to earlier detect patient deterioration. ➡️ Current monitoring practices and factors affecting monitoring in critically ill children in Malawi. ➡️ An in-depth qualitative study, to help inform the development of algorithms, and how to best communicate the data in a user-friendly way to health workers.  ➡️ The usage and effectiveness of the IMPALA system in one of our hospitals in Malawi. 📊When it comes to saving lives, every moment counts, and the development of algorithms that can identify patient deterioration earlier and provide clinically relevant/usable data to health workers will be a game-changer in patient care in low-resource settings. 🌍It is so amazing to be able to celebrate the hard work of all the people behind the scenes of IMPALA and to hear about the latest work on the IMPALA system. If you would like to know about all the newest developments of IMPALA and GOAL 3, follow us on LinkedIn. 👍 Ps. Our IMPALA monitors are big news in the National Malawi Newspaper!🎉 🗞️This past week both the Daily Times Malawi and The Nation Malawi ran a story about the IMPALA monitors that were installed in the pediatrics and neonatology wards in two district hospitals in Malawi, Kapiri and Mchinji, in collaboration with Amref Health Africa in Malawi and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. 👶🏾The stories highlighted the impact the monitors are having on the Malawian hospitals thus far, with the Amref business manager saying that “the monitors are set to revolutionize neonatal care in Mchinji.” 🏥The two Malawian hospitals were also visited by a group of stakeholders including government officials from the Ministry of Health, the AMREF and GIZ team, and our very own Bart Bierling and Janharmen Drost. The stakeholders were very impressed with the IMPALA monitors and saw the value of scaling the IMPALA to further hospitals or even nationally. ⏩Both hospitals were very enthusiastic about the monitors thus far, specifically mentioning that they saw a significant drop in referrals with the monitors, as they were able to take care of unconscious malaria patients themselves. These are exciting results as a drop in referrals means that patients can get higher-quality care closer to home. For many patients being referred means high opportunity costs, traveling hundreds of kilometers to big cities where they have little to no network or funds to support them, and losing multiple days of income. 👩🏾⚕️ GOAL 3 was founded to empower healthcare workers and save patient lives. To have our stories told in the local newspaper, to hear the enthusiasm of the stakeholders, and to see the real-life impact of IMPALA further affirm the important work we are doing. If you would like to stay up to date about the impact GOAL 3 is having, be sure to follow us on LinkedIn. 👍 AMREF, Amref Flying Doctors NL, AMREF Flying Doctors

Live from our WHA session in Geneva: We need to 4x our efforts in the next 6 years! 📣 🎤 Our CEO Niek Versteegde spoke at a side event at the World Health Assembly organized by Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and Save the Children International on Tuesday morning. The event was focused on  'scaling up integrated models of care to address maternal and child mortality.’ Some key points discussed include: ➡️ We need to 4x our current efforts to reduce under-five mortality to meet the Sustainable Development Goal of ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age by 2030. ➡️ We cannot fund all needed health staff in low and middle-income countries, so radical innovation is needed to meet the SDGs. ➡️ Innovation does not fit within the paradigm of the current health systems so we need to start the conversation today as “change starts with a good conversation”  👩🏾⚕️Furthermore – the Tanzanian 🇹🇿 Minister of Health Ummy Ally Mwalimu was present at the event.  Recognizing the potential of GOAL 3’s IMPALA system she invited GOAL 3 to scale up in Tanzania to many more hospitals! 🏥 We are thrilled to have received the blessing of the Health Minister of Tanzania and we look forward to doing just what she proposed, bringing the IMPALA system to many more hospitals and preventing thousands of child deaths. 🌏 If you would like to join in the mission of stopping preventable child deaths by 2030 please follow us on LinkedIn, subscribe to our newsletter, share our story, and get involved. 📣 We need to 4x our efforts in the next 6 years to achieve this goal. 🙌🏼 We cannot do it without you. P.S. Photo is of our CEO in conversation with the Minister of Health of the United Republic of Tanzania Ummy Ally Mwalimu (on the right).
