“Successful collaboration between academia and industry can be immensely enriching and fun. It's important to acknowledge and define the different objectives of both sides at the outset. Transparency is crucial." These insights from Professor Jack Pronk underscore the vital interplay between academia and industry in advancing biotechnology. Planet-B.io had the opportunity to sit down with Professor Pronk to discuss his views on entrepreneurship in industrial biotechnology. Did he ever considered becoming an entrepreneur himself? Planet B.io is the open innovation hub for industrial biotechnology at the Biotech Campus Delft.
Over ons
Planet B.io is a non-profit organization established to develop the Biotech Campus Delft into the scale up campus for industrial biotechnology in Europe. We focus on two activities: we provide biotech firms access to top class labs and offices; second, we actively support collaboration in an ecosystem that offers biotech firms whatever they need to scale up and grow. Planet B.io is a fast-growing organization, with a team that consists of high performing professionals, glued together by fascination for biotech and passion to improve the world. At Planet B.io, we believe that the innovation power of modern biotechnology enables us to develop solutions that help the transition from a depleting, polluting, fossil-based economy, into a sustainable, biobased and circular economy. Our mission is to accelerate this transition. Founding partners of Planet B.io are Royal DSM, Delft University of Technology, Municipality of Delft, Province of South Holland and InnovationQuarter.

Our partner BioTech Delft, in collaboration with Cellulaire Agricultuur Nederland, is launching a new 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲; 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 - 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘁. From 12 - 14 November, participants will familiarize themselves with potential CellAg products and the key considerations and disciplines needed to design production processes. The multidisciplinarity is reflected in the program, where teachers from universities and companies join forces to offer a selection of theory and practice. In this way, the course will provide an intensive overview of the state of the art and the necessary link between the various disciplines. ✨ Companies associated with Planet-B.io receive a special rate for courses organised by BioTech Delft. This week Planet-B.io participates at the European Congress on Biotechnology in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. #ECB2024 was kicked off by an inspiring lecture by Sang Yup Lee presenting his work on systems metabolic engineering. We witnessed amongst others the aspiring session from the Nederlandse Biotechnologie Vereniging in which Jack Pronk shared the story of his many PhD-students, engineering yeast for ethanol production and in which Linda Dijkshoorn brought us on her entrepreneurial journey, founding EV Biotech. We congratulate Michiel Michels of Avans University of Applied Sciences for following-up our own CEO, Cindy Gerhardt winning the NBV 'Zilveren Zandloper' (silver hourglass). Great to see so many references to our Planet-B.io tenants and/or members ExCulture, Nature's Principles, Paques Biomaterials and Meatable throughout the congress. Wanna turn your science into an entrepreneurship journey to begin the next unicorn? Make sure you talk to Fenneke Anderluh-Jolink or Bouke de Jong at ECB2024! #ECB2024 #biotechnology #entrepreneurship

Earlier this month, the BaSyC ("Building a Synthetic Cell") consortium, including 20 PhD students, post-docs, and principal investigators, visited Planet-B.io. As part of the Zwaartekracht programme coordinated by TU Delft, BaSyC aims to create a life-like synthetic cell capable of autonomous growth, information transmission, and division. During the visit, we explored the impact of biotechnology entrepreneurship, hearing inspiring stories from Jules Rombouts (Nature's Principles), Marcel Wubbolts (Vivici), and Pauline van Deursen (Vitrotem). Their journeys, supported by Planet-B.io, highlighted the potential for real societal impact and environmental benefits. Connecting young academics with seasoned biotech entrepreneurs was both enjoyable and motivating. We hope to see these talented individuals pursue their biotech dreams at Planet-B.io! #SyntheticBiology #Biotechnology #Entrepreneurship #Innovation #BaSyC
