Did you know that electric city bus penetration is booming in Europe, and that Chinese and Turkish original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are gaining market share? Electric city bus penetration is booming, with sales in 2023 exceeding those of diesel city buses. This is fuelling a growing level of competition from Chinese and Turkish electric city bus manufacturers that are entering the market. Between 2017 and 2023, the market share of EU suppliers declined from 74% to 54% while Chinese OEMs increased their share from 13% to 24% in the European market. This led to the entrance of strong players such as BYD and Yutong. Turkish OEMs, the recent newcomers in the European market, have acquired 6% of the market since 2022. Despite the Turkish debut, it's the Chinese brands that could potentially surge in market share. The current overcapacity in the Chinese electric passenger vehicle (EV) sector, has led to aggressive pricing strategies that could extend to the heavy-duty vehicle segment. Additionally, the Chinese yuan renminbi has depreciated by 12% with respect to the EUR since 2022, incentivizing European customers to buy the now relatively cheaper Chinese city buses. On top of the change in terms of trade, Chinese brands enjoy the biggest domestic electric city bus market, as 85% of electric city buses in operation today are in China. With a bigger home market, Chinese OEMs can expand production with confidence and achieve higher economies of scale. The EC probe into possible subsidies from the Chinese government into the battery electric vehicle sector could slow down the trend by imposing tariffs but might trigger retaliatory measures from China that could impact the supply chain for electric city buses.

Carbon dioxide pipeline development is essential for expanding the range of carbon capture projects in the US. Without it, CCS projects must be located near an existing pipeline or geologic storage, or they must directly integrate use of captured carbon in their processes. We outline the challenges (and advantages) facing both greenfield and pipeline conversion projects – from permits to competition. #RaboResearch Nina F.

Did you know that the Dutch government has signed countless hydrogen partnerships, Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), and other types of agreements with multiple countries across most continents? The Dutch government actively seeks to position the Netherlands as a reliable trade partner and clean energy hub in northwest Europe. The Port of Rotterdam currently serves as the energy hub for northwest Europe and handles 8,800 petajoules (PJ) in fossil fuels annually. This is about 2,444TWh, or more than three times the Dutch primary energy consumption and 17% of the EU’s primary energy consumption in 2022. However, with the phase-out of fossil fuels, Rotterdam must shift its focus toward renewable fuel flows to maintain its relevance. Leveraging its status as Europe’s largest energy hub, the Port of Rotterdam is well-positioned to become a central import hub for hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives in Europe. In addition to the Dutch government's energy diplomacy, the Port of Rotterdam also actively pursues its own hydrogen agreements and partnerships with entities around the world. Read the full report to learn about our views on the Dutch hydrogen quest and what it takes to decarbonize Dutch hydrogen demand. 👉https://lnkd.in/e_R6Rp7v #RaboResearch #weeklyhighlight #EnergyTransition #hydrogen #investments #netherlands Susan Hansen Hyung-Ja de Zeeuw
