About us
The island of St Helena is an internally self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom located in the South Atlantic approximately 4,000 miles from the UK. The Government comprises a Governor (who is appointed by the Crown) an Executive Council, which has the general control and direction of Government, and a Legislative Council. The Governor retains responsibility for internal security, external affairs, defence, the public service, finance and shipping. The island’s population is around 4,500 and it has a typical small island economy with a high import dependency, a narrow economic base, a large public sector (around 790 staff), and significant outward labour migration. St Helena receives UK Government financial assistance to support recurrent and capital expenditure as part of their obligation to ensure that the reasonable needs of the population are met. St Helena Research Institute to Host First Online Conference on St Helena The St Helena Research Institute (SHRI), established in 2019, is proud to announce its first global research conference, ‘St Helena: a unique environment, a rich tapestry’, in collaboration with the University of Manchester. This landmark online event will be held on Wednesday 20 November 2024, with a possible extension to Thursday 21 November depending on interest. The conference aims to unite researchers and stakeholders from St Helena itself, those who have conducted research on or around the island remotely, and anyone interested in the island’s fascinating history and environment. A Bye-election to fill the vacant seat on the St Helena Legislative Council following the resignation of councillor Rosemary Bargo on 31 May 2024 will take place on 14 August 2024. For those interested in being nominated as a candidate in the bye-election, this post is intended to give potential candidates key information on what to expect, if they become a Councillor. As well as representing constituents for the electoral district allocated to them, Councillors will be expected to attend the following meetings on a regular basis: 📌 Formal Meetings of Legislative Council 📌 Informal meetings of the Legislative Council or Elected Members 📌Ministers Question Time 📌Select Committee meetings/Public Accounts Committee Members of the Legislative Council automatically become members of the St Helena branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and there may be opportunities for Councillors to attend various conferences organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in the UK. Remuneration and allowances for Members of the Council are fixed by law, in the Legislative Council (Remuneration and Allowances) Ordinance 2010, as amended in 2021. 📌Elected Members who do not hold the office of Chief Minister or Minister receive remuneration of £20,000 per annum @StHelenaLegislativeCouncil
