At Avalon Archaeology history is brought to life through richly decorated archaeological reconstructions filled with hand-crafted furniture and authentic art. We are open for general visits, guided tours, group visits and special events.

On your visit you can explore:

  • Saxon longhall based on the palace excavated at nearby Cheddar decorated with carved furniture, woodwork and murals
  • Roman dining room from a typical Somerset villa with a magnificent mosaic floor and murals, and a hypocaust heating system
  • Viking trading vessel with mast and rigging based on the Skuldelev 3 wreck
  • Iron Age Roundhouse based on those in the Glastonbury Lake Village (under construction)
  • The world’s oldest excavation hut and a cinema showing short films on local archaeology

Guided Tours

Our booked guided tours last for approximately 1.5 hours. Tickets are £8.50 and should be booked in advance. The tour price includes free re-entry to the site during normal opening hours for the whole of 2024.

Our guided tours are an opportunity to discover more about the buildings, art and social life of the Iron Age, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Viking periods. You will discover how the buildings and their contents have been created, learn more about traditional craft skills and materials that were used and understand how far the archaeological, literary and historical evidence can take us and what aspects of these early times remain shrouded in mystery.

At the end of the tour there will be an opportunity to wander and take photos, just sit by the fire, or watch some of the short films about the local archaeology in our mini cinema.

Group Visits

You are welcome to bring your group to visit Avalon Archaeology on days we are usually closed to the public, Monday to Saturday. You will have exclusive access to the site and receive a guided tour of the reconstructions. Times can be arranged to suit you and include evening visits in the lighter summer months. If you visit on a Wednesday our volunteers will be working on projects around the site.

The minimum group size is 10 and maximum is 30. It is £8.50 per person. Each visitor will receive free re-entry to the site during 2024. It is possible to accommodate larger groups if your visit is combined with a visit to the Avalon Marshes Centre or near by nature reserves. Refreshments can be organised with the Marshes Hub Tea Stop.
